Cleaning should always be done with the iron unplugged and completely cool. A soft, slightly damp cloth is usually enough to remove dust and the superficial film that builds up with use. Steam, for its part, should be used with judgment. Too much can wet the garment, load the soleplate with residue, and encourage splattering. A steady emission, not a continuous blast, usually gives better results. When steam comes out intermittently or barely appears, the problem is usually related to limescale or a partial blockage. How to store it without shortening its lifespan

Storage is part of maintenance, even though it is often treated as a minor detail. An iron stored in an unstable position, with the cord twisted or still hot, ages prematurely.
