E18 error in Balay washing machine: drain causes and fix
Find out what causes E18 and how to safely inspect your Balay washing machine drain.

When a Balay washing machine displays the E18 code and leaves water in the drum, the problem is usually with drainage, not washing. A blocked filter, a bent hose or a jammed pump are the most common causes and can often be checked without taking the appliance apart.
If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code search tool. From there, you can find out about and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the E18 code means on a Balay washing machine
E18 appears when the machine detects that water is not leaving within the expected time. As a safety measure, it interrupts the program and usually also prevents spinning: accelerating clothes while the drum is full would be unsafe. The visible result is simple: soaked clothes, standing water and an incomplete cycle.
In the documentation for some models from the BSH group, which includes Balay, this warning is linked to a drainage problem. The name and code may vary by series, so the appliance manual should be checked. It should not automatically be confused with F4: assigning the same meaning to every model may lead you to inspect the wrong component.
Checks that often fix the fault
Before touching the washing machine, switch it off, unplug it and close the water supply. Place a towel and a container under the lower cover, because the filter may release a considerable amount of water. If the drum is full, drain it slowly; never force the door or try to tilt the appliance.
The first check should focus on the drain filter. Remove it slowly, clear away lint, coins, buttons or other objects and clean the thread. The pump impeller is usually behind it: it should turn with some resistance but must not be stuck. Then inspect the rear hose, which must not be crushed, bent or inserted into the drain at an incorrect height.
Once the circuit is clear, refit the filter and select a drain or short spin program with no clothes inside. A continuous hum without water leaving may indicate an internal blockage; no sound at all suggests that the drain pump, its wiring or the electronic control needs professional inspection.
When it is no longer a household cleaning job
A burning smell, a leak, metallic noises, a tripped circuit breaker or an E18 that returns after cleaning the filter are signs to stop testing. Assistance is also advisable if water returns to the drum, the pump loses power or the machine always stops at the same stage.
The pump operates close to water and electrical connections, so replacing it without the required knowledge can cause damage or an electric shock. A technician can check the impeller, the pressure switch that measures water level, electrical continuity and the control board. Do not repeatedly restart the machine to hide the warning: the extra strain can make the repair more expensive.
Maintenance to prevent the drain from blocking again
Emptying pockets, closing zippers and removing small objects reduces the amount of debris reaching the filter. Cleaning it every one or two months is a sensible routine in frequently used households; with fewer washes, checking it every three months may be enough. Detergent should be measured according to the load and water hardness, since excess product encourages foam and deposits.
Leave the door slightly open after each cycle, clean the seal and air the detergent drawer. The washing machine must be level and the hose free from tension and sharp bends. These habits cannot eliminate a worn pump, but they do reduce the risk of blockages, bad smells and new drainage failures.
A small warning that protects the entire washing machine
E18 is not a minor fault simply because it appears on a screen: it indicates that water is not following its normal path. Handling the simple checks first resolves many cases, while recognizing electrical or mechanical symptoms prevents a blockage from becoming a larger repair. In a Balay machine, the drain acts like the final gate of the cycle; if it remains closed, the entire wash stops.
