Balay washer E2 error: causes, costs and safe solutions
The code is usually linked to the motor. Learn the causes, likely cost and checks to make before dismantling anything.

The E2 code on a Balay washing machine usually means that the appliance has detected a problem with the motor turning. In many cases, the cause is not the complete motor but worn carbon brushes, a loose connection or a faulty tachometer that reports drum speed to the control board.
If the warning appears during washing or spinning, the machine may stop to protect the motor. Diagnosis begins by checking whether the drum turns freely and whether the code disappears after cutting the power, but the washer should never be dismantled while connected to electricity.
If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code search tool. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the E2 code means on a Balay washer
On many Balay washing machines using technology from the BSH group, E2 or E02 is linked to the motor drive circuit. The electronics command the motor to start, but do not receive the expected response. As a result, the drum may remain still, move unevenly or fail to reach spin speed.
The exact interpretation depends on the model and the E-Nr number shown on the rating plate, normally located inside the door frame. Newer generations may display different codes for a similar fault, so the model manual should take priority over any general error-code table.
The most common causes and approximate cost
The most frequent issue in conventional motors is worn carbon brushes. These small carbon parts rub against the commutator and transfer current to the motor; after many cycles, they become shorter and lose contact. A compatible set usually costs between 15 and 30 euros, while original brushes may cost approximately 25 to 35 euros.
There may also be an oxidized connector, damaged wiring, a faulty tachometer or an object preventing the drum from turning. If labor is required, a technician may add around 50 to 80 euros, depending on the area and access to the motor. A control board or complete motor raises the budget considerably, so the part should be confirmed before purchase.
Safe checks before carrying out a repair
Turn off the washer, close the water tap and unplug it for at least five minutes. With the drum empty, try to turn it gently by hand: it should offer some resistance, but it should not lock or make a metallic scraping sound. If there is a burning smell, smoke, sparks or loud noise, stop testing and request professional assistance.
When the drum turns normally, resetting the appliance may rule out a temporary fault, although it will not repair a worn part. Replacing carbon brushes requires removing panels and accessing the motor; some Balay models also use brushless motors, where diagnosis is completely different. The replacement part should be identified using the full E-Nr model number, not the brand alone.
When repairing the washer makes sense
A repair involving brushes, wiring or a contact is usually reasonable, particularly if the washer has no leaks, noisy bearings or control-board damage. The drum sound can also provide clues: an irregular hum and uneven rotation point toward the drive system, while a constant roar during spinning may indicate worn bearings.
If the quote includes a motor, electronic module and call-out charge, compare it with the appliance’s age and overall condition. The E2 code does not automatically mean the washer must be replaced: it often reveals localized, repairable wear. The decision should be based on motor testing and exact spare-part compatibility, not on the code alone.
