Error 16 on a Balay washing machine: causes and safe fixes
Code E16 points to the door lock: learn its causes and the checks that may solve the problem safely.

When a Balay washing machine displays code E16, the program usually stops because the system cannot confirm that the door is closed and locked. It is not normally a motor or water-inlet problem, but an issue involving the assembly that keeps the drum sealed during washing. A trapped garment, misaligned latch or worn door interlock can trigger the warning.
If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code search tool. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What code E16 means on a Balay washing machine
The door has a safety mechanism that prevents the cycle from starting until it is properly engaged. When start is pressed, the electronic control waits for a signal from the door interlock, also known as the door lock or safety latch. If that confirmation does not arrive, the error appears and the machine prevents the drum from turning or water from entering.
The fault may be temporary. A folded sheet, sock or poorly positioned door seal can stop the door from closing fully. It may also appear after the door has been forced, the drum overloaded or detergent and dirt have collected around the latch. The display describes the symptom, but it cannot always identify the failed part by itself.
Simple checks before removing any panels
Turn off the appliance, remove any garment sticking out and inspect the door frame in good light. The rubber seal should be flat, clean and free of cuts; if it is distorted or pinched, the door may look closed without applying enough pressure to the lock. Clean the latch and its housing with a slightly damp cloth, without inserting objects or applying liquid directly.
Then close the door firmly but without slamming it and check whether the handle offers normal resistance. A reset can also rule out a temporary electronic lock: unplug the washing machine for a few minutes and reconnect it. Never try to open it while the drum is moving or when water remains inside. If the door stays locked, wait for the automatic release.
When the problem involves the lock or wiring
If the warning returns with an empty, correctly aligned door, the door interlock is the main suspect. This component combines a mechanical latch with an electrical contact and can wear out over time. A loose handle, dropped hinge or door that must be lifted to engage points to a physical alignment problem requiring repair, rather than a simple reset.
Inspecting the lock, its connectors and the internal wiring requires the appliance to be fully disconnected and its panels removed. A loose wire, burned terminal or corroded connection can interrupt the signal even when the door appears to work. Because these components are connected to mains electricity, a technician should carry out this inspection unless you have suitable experience. The control board should only be considered after the door, hinge, seal and interlock have been ruled out.
A fault that should be handled carefully
Do not bypass the door lock or run cycles with the safety mechanism altered. This protection prevents the drum from turning with the door open and stops water escaping during the wash. Replacing a part without checking alignment first may also hide the real cause and allow the code to return.
The most sensible sequence is to remove obstructions, clean and close the door correctly, then reset the appliance and seek professional inspection if the error remains. The door interlock must be replaced with a part compatible with the exact Balay model, since designs can differ between series. The model number, usually found on the label around the door frame, helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and avoids unnecessary repairs.
