E35 error in Balay, Siemens and Bosch washing machines: fix

Code E35 on a Balay, Bosch or Siemens washing machine usually means that the safety system has detected water in the appliance base. The machine interrupts the program to prevent a larger flood, so this is not a minor warning and it will not normally disappear after a simple reset.

Before touching any component, unplug the washing machine, close the water tap and dry any visible water. In the BSH group, which includes these brands, the exact meaning may vary by series and E-Nr. number, but E35 is generally linked to a leak, overfilling or activation of the anti-flood system.

What the E35 code indicates on these washing machines

The lower section of many washing machines contains a float or safety sensor. When water reaches that area, the device informs the electronics, which may then block water intake, drum rotation or the start of a new cycle. The appliance may therefore stop mid-program, beep or display the code shortly after being switched on.

The most frequent cause is a small internal leak in a hose, drain pump, door seal, tub or detergent-drawer connection. It can also appear after using too much detergent: foam overflows, reaches lower areas and activates the protection even when there is no major break.

Common causes and safe checks

With the machine unplugged, inspect the floor, the inlet-hose connection and the drain hose. A loose clamp can leave an extremely thin, almost invisible trail of water, while a damaged door seal usually leaves moisture at the front during washing. Do not restart the appliance if water is still entering.

The detergent drawer also deserves attention. Hardened soap residue can divert water toward the front, while excessive mains pressure or an inlet valve that does not close properly can cause continuous filling. If water enters the drum even when the program is stopped, close the tap and arrange an inspection because the inlet valve may be stuck.

It is not advisable to remove panels or bypass the safety float. Water can reach electrical connections and create a genuine hazard. Drying the base may temporarily clear the warning, but it does not repair the cause of the leak; if the code returns, the fault is still present.

When a reset is not enough

After removing visible water and checking for an obvious leak, some models may resume operation after being disconnected from the power for a few minutes. This only clears an occasional electronic lockout. If E35 returns when a program is selected, the control board is still receiving a moisture signal or detecting an abnormal filling condition.

The repair may involve replacing a clamp, seal or hose, but it may also require checking the pump, pressure switch, inlet valve and sensor wiring. In older machines, a slow leak from the tub or pump can leave whitish detergent marks and rust around the base. That trace can help a technician locate the point of loss.

A safety feature worth taking seriously

Balay, Bosch and Siemens share much of their architecture, but not every model interprets the codes in the same way. The manual and model number are essential before ordering a replacement part, especially because an apparently compatible component may have a different connection or capacity.

E35 serves an important purpose: it stops a machine that could continue accumulating water inside the home. The priority is not to force it to start, but to avoid electrical damage and locate the water entry point. When the code persists after external checks, professional intervention is safer than dismantling the washer without a clear diagnosis.
