An air fryer integrated into the oven combines the capacity of a built-in oven with the intense circulation of hot air that allows you to brown potatoes, vegetables, chicken, or breaded foods with very little oil. What exactly is an oven with a hot-air function?
The technology uses an electric heating element and a fan to move hot air around the food. The perforated tray allows this airflow to pass underneath and lets moisture escape, two conditions that promote a browned and crispy surface. The principle is similar to that of a countertop air fryer, although the inside of the oven is much larger and heat distribution may vary depending on the model.
The decisive difference is that this is not an air fryer that has grown in size, but rather a multifunction oven with a specific program. The hot-air function uses a specific configuration of the fan, heating elements, and temperature to approximate the finish of light frying.
Some manufacturers allow the program to be activated without preheating, while others recommend heating the cavity for a few minutes. This difference affects the result and explains why it is advisable to read the manual before applying the cooking times for a small air fryer. The power, interior volume, type of tray, and distance from the upper heating element change how each appliance performs.
How it works during cooking
When the air-fryer mode is selected, the oven combines intense heat and rapid circulation. The fan distributes the temperature throughout the cavity, but the perforated tray plays an essential role: it keeps the food separated from the surface and makes it easier for air to reach the underside as well. This is why you should not cover it with aluminum foil unless the manufacturer expressly authorizes it.
The food should be arranged in a layer that is as even as possible. The cooking time depends on the size of the pieces, their water content, and whether they are frozen or refrigerated. Some thin potato sticks may be ready in approximately 20 to 25 minutes, while thick wings require more time and an internal check. The exterior color does not guarantee that the meat is fully cooked; for large pieces, it is safer to use a kitchen thermometer.
What results does it offer compared with a standalone air fryer?
The oven’s main advantage is its capacity. A 70- or 72-liter cavity allows you to prepare a large tray of vegetables or several servings of chicken, while a household air fryer usually works with a basket of between 4 and 12 liters. This difference avoids having to cook in batches when there are several people, although it also means that the oven needs to heat a larger space.
A small air fryer may be faster when preparing a small quantity. Its compact chamber concentrates the heat and usually requires less time for a few servings. In contrast, the integrated oven offers more usable surface and greater consistency when cooking for several people, especially if it includes a tray designed to allow air to circulate across the entire base.
The texture may also differ. A narrow basket favors close contact with the airflow, while a wide tray makes it easier to separate the food. Neither system exactly reproduces deep frying, because the crust depends on the food, the oil, and the moisture. The advantage is achieving a toasted exterior with much less fat and without splattering.
Advantages that justify integration
Saving space is the most obvious argument. With the function built into the oven, the countertop remains clear and there is no need to store another heavy appliance in a cabinet. In small kitchens, this difference may be more important than a few minutes of cooking time. The number of cables, controls, and containers that need to be cleaned after each use is also reduced.
The capacity makes it more convenient to cook a complete meal. One tray can hold potatoes and vegetables, while another prepares a dish of fish or pieces of chicken, provided the manual allows several levels to be used with that program. In models with well-designed ventilation, heat is distributed evenly, although it is advisable to leave space between the foods so as not to block the airflow.
The appliance also retains all the functions of a conventional oven. This versatility marks an important difference compared with a basic air fryer, which is limited to a small cavity and hot-air programs.

Opening the door repeatedly, cooking with the oven empty for a long time, or choosing very high temperatures increases consumption. The market offers a wide range. Built-in ovens with a hot-air function and simple finishes can be found for around 290 to 350 euros in promotions or basic ranges. Appliances with more functions, better rails, touchscreens, and cleaning systems generally range from 400 to 600 euros. Higher-capacity models or those with advanced features can reach 700 euros or more.
The price of a model such as the IKEA STENABY 700 is 699 euros in the reference analyzed. It includes a 72-liter cavity, 17 cooking functions, a temperature range of 30 to 300 degrees, a specific hot-air tray, a thermometer, and pyrolytic cleaning. These are specific features that help explain why an integrated oven costs considerably more than a countertop air fryer priced at 80 or 150 euros.
The comparison should also include installation. A built-in oven requires a compatible space, a suitable electrical connection, and attachment to the cabinet. In some cases, a protected circuit and professional work are required. The total cost is not just the price of the box: installation, removal of the old appliance, and possible furniture adjustments must be added if the measurements do not match.
Dimensions, installation, and safety
Most standard-sized built-in ovens are approximately 59.4 centimeters wide and 59 centimeters high, but the exterior dimensions are not enough to confirm compatibility. You need to check the available space, depth, rear ventilation, and the clearance required for the door to open. A few millimeters can prevent the appliance from being properly aligned.
Installation should be carried out by a qualified professional, especially when the oven is connected directly to the electrical supply rather than through a conventional plug. The appliance must be securely fixed to the cabinet and have the ventilation specified by the manufacturer. An improper connection can cause the wiring to overheat, trip the electrical panel, or damage the components.
A door with several panes of glass reduces the exterior temperature, but it does not make the oven safe to touch during operation. The child lock is useful in homes with children, although it does not replace supervision. The area in front of the oven must also be kept clear, and you should avoid storing objects on top if the manufacturer advises against it. Residual heat can remain for quite some time after the appliance is switched off.
Cleaning: tray, cavity, and pyrolysis
The hot-air function usually creates less mess than traditional frying because there is no boiling oil or splattering around the pan. Even so, fat from wings or starch from potatoes can stick to the tray and walls. Cleaning the stains once the oven has cooled, using warm water and mild detergent, prevents the residue from hardening.
The perforated tray requires special attention. Its holes collect small food residues and can become clogged if an unsuitable sponge is used. If it is dishwasher-safe, that option simplifies maintenance, but this should always be confirmed in the instructions. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or harsh products on nonstick coatings.
Pyrolysis heats the interior to a very high temperature to turn grease into ash. Frozen potatoes, croquettes, nuggets, chicken wings, and firm vegetables generally adapt well to the airflow. Zucchini strips, cauliflower, cooked chickpeas, and some breaded fish also work well. Results improve when the foods are a similar size and are arranged without forming piles. Air circulation needs space to act on each piece.
Foods with a lot of moisture, such as certain homemade batters, may be less crispy if the mixture is too liquid. In these cases, it helps to dry the ingredient thoroughly, use a thin layer of breadcrumbs, and add a few drops of oil. Very light batters or soft cheeses may drip, deform, or stick to the tray if they are not placed on a suitable surface.
The oven also allows you to prepare large pieces that do not fit in a household basket. A whole chicken, a tray of vegetables, or several servings of fish have more room, although not all of them should be cooked using the hot-air program. The recipe must be adapted to the selected function: a sponge cake needs stable, gentle heat, while potatoes require ventilation and a surface that promotes evaporation.
Common mistakes when using this function
The first mistake is treating the tray like a conventional tray and covering it completely. Aluminum foil, a closed dish, or a very deep base reduces airflow and can affect the result. It is also common to fill the cavity to its limit because the oven is large. Total capacity is not the same as the amount that can be cooked properly in hot-air mode.
Another mistake is transferring the time and temperature of a recipe designed for a small air fryer without making any changes. An integrated oven may need more time to heat up, but it may also brown the top sooner if the tray is too close to the grill. The first preparation should serve as a test: observe the color, move the food if the manual indicates it, and adjust the time for the next batch.
The conventional fan is also frequently confused with the specific air-fryer program. Both move air, but they do not always use the same heating element or intensity. The name may vary between brands. Before buying, it is preferable to check which accessories are included with the appliance and whether the perforated tray is designed for that function, rather than assuming that any rack will produce the same effect.
What to check before buying
The capacity should correspond to the number of people and the dishes prepared most often. A standard oven with a large tray may be sufficient for a couple; for a large family, a 70-liter cavity offers more flexibility. However, a large oven takes up more space, may require more power, and is not always practical for small quantities.
The type of controls also matters. A touchscreen makes it easier to access programs, while physical knobs may be simpler to use with wet or dirty hands. Automatic programs are useful, but they do not guarantee a perfect result for every brand of potatoes or every piece size. Manual control of temperature and time remains essential.

Is it worth it compared with buying two appliances?
The answer depends on when you are buying. If the kitchen already has an oven in good condition and the only goal is to prepare small portions quickly, a standalone air fryer may be the more economical option. Its initial price is lower, it can be moved, and it requires no construction work or installation. For someone who cooks potatoes, vegetables, or small pieces of chicken daily, its compact format is practical.
If the oven needs replacing, the integrated function makes more sense. For a moderate additional cost within the total purchase, you get an appliance that retains an oven’s capacity and adds a cooking method that uses less oil. Integration avoids duplicating appliances and offers a much larger surface for cooking in a single batch.
That said, you must accept that the oven takes longer to heat up for certain preparations and that a malfunction affects all of its functions, not just the hot-air feature. A standalone air fryer allows you to continue cooking even if the oven fails. The most balanced decision usually depends on the available space, the usual size of meals, and the budget allocated to renovating the kitchen.
A useful function when chosen carefully
Ovens with an air-fryer function are no longer unusual and are part of an offering that includes basic models, high-capacity appliances, and options with pyrolytic cleaning. The purchase makes the most sense when you need a new oven, cook for several people, and do not have room on the countertop for another appliance. The final choice is less like choosing between two rival appliances and more like deciding how to organize the kitchen for the coming years. An integrated oven with a good ventilation system, a suitable tray, and clear controls can become the center of the kitchen; one chosen solely for its label may end up offering a rarely used function. The best technology is the one that fits real habits, not the one that accumulates the most names on the control panel.
