The program may therefore stop before spinning, leaving clothes soaked, with detergent residue or with a damp smell if they remain in the drum too long.

The exact interpretation may vary according to the washing machine model and series, so the user manual is the primary reference. Even so, the components involved are generally the same: filter, internal hose, external drain hose, drain pump and the circuit that monitors the water level. Do not insert screwdrivers or metal objects into the pump, and do not remove panels without experience: an apparently simple test can cause a leak or damage internal connections.

When it is no longer a household check

Professional assistance is advisable when F4 returns after cleaning the filter and checking the hose, or when the washing machine retains water, leaks or produces unusual knocks and humming sounds. Help should also be requested if the display shows other codes, the circuit breaker trips or there is a smell of overheated wiring. In these situations, repeatedly running new cycles can increase pump wear and the risk of damage.

A technician can check the flow rate, measure the pump, inspect the pressure switch and verify the wiring without replacing parts by trial and error. Preventive maintenance helps reduce recurrences: clean the filter regularly, empty pockets, use the recommended detergent dose and leave the door ajar after washing to limit residue, odors and moisture. Responding to the first signs prevents a drainage warning from becoming a major repair.
