Error E54 in Electrolux washing machine

Error: E54

The E54 code in Electrolux appliances generally indicates a fault in the motor drive or the reversing/drive relay circuitry. On many Electrolux washing machines this is reported as a problem with the contact group of the reverse relay (the contact has sunk). In some models the same code can be caused by a motor fault or a failed TRIAC/relay on the electronic control board.

Symptoms

  • Machine displays E54 and stops mid-cycle or will not start the motor.
  • Motor does not spin or spins intermittently.
  • Unusual noises from the motor area, or failure to reach spin speed.
  • Control panel unresponsive or repeated attempts to drive the motor.

Possible causes

  • Worn or damaged contact group of the reverse relay (contacts have sunk or failed).
  • Faulty TRIAC or relay on the electronic control board that drives the motor.
  • Loose or corroded motor connections or wiring harness faults.
  • Motor internal faults: worn brushes, failed tachometer (speed sensor), damaged coils or other motor components.
  • Intermittent faults on the electronic board that control the motor.

Diagnosis — step-by-step checks

  1. Safety first: disconnect the appliance from mains power before inspecting electrical components.
  2. Check the control panel for stuck or activated buttons that could inhibit normal operation.
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors between the control board and the motor for loose plugs, burn marks or corrosion.
  4. Inspect the relay contact group on the board for burned, pitted or sunk contacts.
  5. Test the TRIAC and motor relay on the electronic board (use a multimeter or consult a technician if you are not experienced with electronics).
  6. Check motor components: brushes (wear), tachometer continuity, and windings for open/short circuits.
  7. If applicable, confirm there is no mechanical obstruction preventing the drum or motor from turning.

Solutions

  • Replace the contact group of the reverse relay if contacts are damaged or sunk.
  • Repair or replace a faulty TRIAC or relay on the electronic control board.
  • Secure or replace damaged connectors and wiring between the board and motor.
  • Service or replace motor components: renew brushes, repair/replace tachometer or windings as required.
  • If the electronic board is intermittently failing, replace the control board or its defective components.

Practical tips and precautions

  • Always unplug the appliance before attempting any inspection or repair.
  • If you are not comfortable with electrical diagnostics or component-level repair, contact an authorized Electrolux service technician.
  • Document any error behavior and the steps you took to help the technician diagnose the fault faster.

More tips: If you cannot resolve the E54 error after the checks above, contact Electrolux technical service or a qualified repair specialist to avoid further damage. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and perform safe repairs.
