When a Cecotec scooter turns on, shows battery charge and still does not respond to the throttle, the cause is usually the brake sensor, throttle control, a loose connection or the controller. Before opening the deck, perform a few simple checks: many apparent faults are caused by a brake that remains activated or by a battery with insufficient voltage.

If you have a problem with your electric scooter, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

The brake and throttle are the first suspects

Electric scooters include a safety system that blocks the motor when it detects that the brake lever is pressed. Squeeze and release the lever several times, check that it fully returns to its position and see whether the rear light remains on without touching it. If the light stays illuminated or the vehicle shows a brake icon, the sensor may be stuck, misaligned or disconnected.

The throttle can also become stuck because of dirt, moisture or an impact to the handlebar. With the scooter switched off, move the lever or control gently and check that it returns to its starting position. Do not force it or spray lubricant inside the housing: a throttle that does not return to zero can prevent startup as a safety measure. On older models, the control cable runs through the stem and may deteriorate after repeated folding.

What to check before taking the scooter apart

Switch the vehicle off, unplug the charger and let it cool down if it has just been ridden. Then check that the battery has sufficient charge and that the charger changes from red to green when the cycle is complete. A deeply discharged battery may turn on the display but fail to deliver the current needed to move the motor; the range shown on the display does not always mean the battery is healthy.

Also inspect the visible connectors around the handlebar, display and stem, without pulling the wires. Moisture, vibration and folding can loosen a connection. If you notice a burnt plastic smell, unusual heat, blackened wires or crackling sounds, stop using the scooter and do not try to bypass the battery. The controller regulates the energy sent to the motor, and incorrect handling can cause a short circuit or fire.

On some Bongo models, error codes help guide the diagnosis, although their meaning varies by series. In older ranges, E2 is often linked to the throttle, while E3 may indicate the brake or control on certain versions. On the Z series, E3 is commonly associated with the throttle and E8 with the brake lever. The code must be interpreted together with the exact model and its corresponding manual, not treated as definitive proof that a particular part has failed.

When the controller or motor may be at fault

If the throttle works, the brake is released and the scooter still does not move, the fault may be in the controller, motor or Hall sensors. Previous jerking, a sudden shutdown, a strong burnt smell or a display that keeps restarting are especially important signs. In these situations, repeated testing can worsen the damage, particularly on models with dual motors and higher-capacity batteries.

Opening the deck is only appropriate for someone experienced in electric vehicle electronics. The battery can retain a dangerous charge even when the switch is off, and motor phase wires carry high currents. It is not safe to solder connectors, replace the controller or bypass sensors without isolating the battery first. An improvised repair can remove electrical protection and affect the warranty.

A safe repair starts by identifying the series

The solution differs between an older Outsider, a Bongo Series A, a D40, a Y45, a Y65 or a Z series model. Throttles, connectors and warning-code meanings also vary. Note the full scooter name, the displayed code, the behavior of the brake light and what happened before the fault. This information helps distinguish a simple adjustment from an electronic failure.

If the vehicle is still within the applicable legal warranty period in Spain, avoid dismantling it and keep the receipt, serial number and photographs of its exterior condition. Damage caused by moisture, impacts or modifications may affect coverage. A scooter that does not accelerate does not always need a new part: sometimes releasing the brake sensor or securing a connector is enough, but the priority should be restoring control without putting the rider at risk.
