E18 error in a Balay VarioPerfect washer: causes and fix
Find out what blocks the drain and how to inspect your Balay washer safely before calling a technician.

The E18 code on a Balay VarioPerfect washing machine generally means that the appliance cannot drain the water from the drum within the expected time. The cycle may stop with wet clothes and water inside, but the warning does not automatically mean that the machine has suffered a major failure: a blocked filter, a kinked hose or an object trapped in the pump are common causes.

What the E18 code means on a Balay VarioPerfect
The washing machine monitors the water level through sensors and expects draining to finish within a set period. When water remains in the drum, E18 appears and the program stops to prevent the motor from spinning with an abnormal load or causing an overflow. Some equivalent models from the BSH group may also display F18, with a similar meaning.
The simplest cause is often the drain filter. Coins, hairpins, lint, buttons or small socks can collect there and restrict the flow of water. It is also important to distinguish this warning from inlet errors: if the issue were that the washer was not receiving water, the tap and inlet hose would need checking rather than focusing only on drainage.
Safe checks before looking for an internal fault
Before touching any part, switch off the washing machine, unplug it and wait a few minutes. If the drum is full, place towels and a container beneath the filter cover; water may come out suddenly and reach the floor. Open the filter slowly, let the water drain and remove visible debris. The pump impeller should move fairly freely, although it may not spin without any resistance.
Next, check the drain hose from the rear of the appliance to the wall pipe. It should not be crushed behind the machine, sharply bent or pushed too far into the drain. A partially blocked household pipe can also trigger E18; a useful check is to see whether water flows normally when the hose is emptied into a container or when the drain itself is inspected.
Once the filter is clean and everything is back in place, reconnect the appliance and select a drain or spin function, depending on your model’s control panel. If the water leaves and the code disappears, the cause was probably a temporary blockage. Avoid repeatedly running the washer while the drum remains full, since the extra strain may damage the pump or leave moisture trapped in the laundry.
When E18 persists and needs technical inspection
If the error returns with a clean filter and clear hose, the pump may be internally blocked, have a damaged impeller or be receiving no electrical power. Wiring, the water-level detection system or the electronic board may also be involved. These checks require dismantling the appliance and testing components, so they should not be attempted while the washer is connected.
A pump that hums but does not move water is often blocked or worn; if it remains completely silent during draining, an electrical fault may be present. Repair costs depend on the model, replacement part and labor, so the code alone cannot provide a reliable price. The E-Nr number on the rating plate helps identify the exact version and compatible replacement part.
Resolving a drainage fault promptly protects the floor, prevents bad odors and reduces the risk of moisture reaching electrical connections. In many cases, careful cleaning restores normal operation; when that is not enough, professional inspection distinguishes a faulty pump from a control problem and avoids replacing parts unnecessarily.
