Balay washer error E28: causes and safe solutions

Code E28 on a Balay washing machine usually appears during the spin cycle, when the appliance detects that the drum is not turning evenly. The cause may be as simple as clothes gathered in one mass or as significant as worn shock absorbers. What the E28 code means on a Balay

On compatible models, E28 identifies an issue with imbalance detection or with the sensor that monitors vibrations in the assembly made up of the drum and tub. The washing machine tries to redistribute the laundry before reaching the planned spin speed; if it cannot do so, it stops the program to prevent damage and reduces or cancels the spin cycle.

A large towel mixed with a few small items can create a compact mass on one side of the drum. Overloading, a very small load, an unlevel installation or worn suspension parts can also contribute. Therefore, the code does not always mean that a sensor has failed: the laundry movement and the machine’s mechanical condition provide important clues.

Checks that may clear the problem

Before touching any component, switch off the washing machine, unplug it and wait until the drum has stopped completely. Open the door and separate any tangled items. Remove some laundry if the drum is too full, or add a few similarly sized items if it contains one heavy piece. Then try a moderate spin with the load spread out, without exceeding the capacity shown on the appliance label.

The machine must stand on a firm, level surface. All four feet should rest securely, without rocking when you press the corners. If the warning returns with normal loads, the shock absorbers may be worn. These parts control tub movement and, when they lose effectiveness, allow the assembly to bounce during spinning. Oil leaks, broken mounts, hard knocks and a drum that moves excessively when pushed are useful signs. Worn shock absorbers are generally replaced in pairs so both sides provide similar resistance.

Sensor, counterweights and the limits of home repair

Some versions include a vibration sensor or an equivalent system integrated into the electronics. A loose connector, damaged wire or shifted mounting can prevent the control board from interpreting movement correctly. Checking these components requires removing panels and working near electrical connections, so it must never be done while the appliance is plugged in. The location and design vary according to the exact model.

The concrete or cast-iron counterweight attached to the tub also deserves attention. A crack or loose bolt changes the balance and causes loud knocks, especially as the speed rises. Stop using the washing machine if there is a burning smell, leaking water, sparks or persistent metallic banging. In these circumstances, inspection of the sensors, wiring, counterweights and suspension should be left to a qualified technician.

When it is more than a simple imbalance

If E28 disappears after redistributing the laundry, does not return with a balanced load and the washing machine remains stable, the cause was probably temporary. However, repeated code displays with an almost empty drum, jumping during every spin or an inability to turn normally point to a mechanical or detection fault.

The model manual determines the exact meaning of the code and the procedure for accessing each component. Note when the warning appears, how much laundry was inside and whether unusual noise or vibration occurred.
