Balay shows a two-digit error: meaning and solution
Decode your Balay appliance’s two-digit codes and find out what you can check before requesting service.

When a Balay appliance displays two digits, it does not always indicate a serious breakdown. The code may point to a water, drainage, door, motor or electronic problem, but its meaning varies according to the appliance and model. Reading the complete code and locating the E-Nr. is essential before touching any component.
In washing machines, common warnings include E02, E06, E17, E18 or equivalent codes beginning with F. Ovens and hobs use different combinations, while some older appliances communicate the issue through flashing indicator lights. The safest first step is to switch the appliance off, unplug it for about five minutes and check whether the warning returns.
If you have a problem with your oven, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What two-digit codes mean on Balay appliances
On a Balay washing machine, E02 is usually linked to the motor, although the naming can vary between generations. The appliance may fail to spin, stop during a cycle or show the warning when centrifuging begins. If the drum is jammed, there is a burning smell or clicking sounds are heard, unplug the appliance and do not keep trying.
Codes E17, F17 or their variants usually point to water inlet difficulties. A closed tap, a bent hose or a blocked inlet filter can prevent the washing machine from filling. By contrast, E18 or F18 are commonly associated with drainage problems: a dirty drain filter, a blocked pump or a crushed outlet hose. A coin, hairpin or buildup of lint can be enough to stop drainage.
Other two-digit warnings involve the door lock, temperature, excessive foam or electronics. Their precise meaning should not be inferred from the number alone, because Balay uses BSH platforms shared with Bosch and Siemens while also adapting codes to each series. The label containing the E-Nr. is usually found inside the door frame, behind a cover or on the rear of the appliance.
Safe checks before repairing the appliance
A basic inspection can resolve simple issues. Make sure the tap is fully open, the hoses are not bent and the inlet filter contains no sediment. For a drainage fault, place a container beneath the filter, open it slowly and remove the water before cleaning it. Electricity and water must be kept apart throughout the operation.
On a hob or oven, restarting may clear a warning caused by a temporary voltage fluctuation. Disconnect the appliance at the plug or circuit breaker for several minutes and reconnect it only once it is cool. Do not remove the casing to inspect sensors, boards or wiring: capacitors may retain charge even after the power is cut.
Professional assistance is needed if the code returns, the drum does not turn freely, there is a leak, smoke or sparks appear, the circuit breaker trips or a burnt plastic smell is noticeable. Diagnosis is also advisable when the estimated cost of an electronic board, motor or pump approaches the appliance’s value. The code guides the search but does not replace a technical test or confirm on its own which part must be replaced.
The exact model makes the difference
Two Balay appliances can display the same combination and have different causes. The series, manufacturing year and display type affect the interpretation, especially in older washing machines without a screen. In those models, a sequence of lights may represent an issue that newer appliances show with one letter and two digits.
Recording the code exactly as shown, photographing the panel and keeping the E-Nr. makes servicing easier and helps avoid incompatible spare parts. Accurate identification prevents incorrect diagnoses and distinguishes a child lock or maintenance warning from a genuine fault.
