E18 Error in a Balay Washer Dryer: Causes and Solution
Code E18 is usually caused by a blocked drain. Learn how to check it safely and identify faults requiring professional help.
The E18 code on a Balay washer dryer indicates that the appliance cannot drain the water from the drum within the expected time. The most common cause is a blocked pump filter, although a kinked hose, a clogged household drain or a damaged pump may also be involved.

What the E18 code means on a Balay appliance
The machine may stop before spinning, leave clothes soaked and retain water in the tub. Some models display E18 and others F18, but both warnings usually point to the same circuit: the drainage system. The lock does not necessarily mean there is a serious failure; it often acts as a safeguard that prevents the program from continuing with accumulated water.
The filter in the lower front area catches coins, buttons, lint and small objects left in pockets. Over time, this mixture can form a dense plug. It is also worth noting whether you hear a hum without water leaving the appliance: this usually means the pump is receiving power, but its impeller is blocked or cannot move the water.
The hose position matters more than it may seem. It must remain free of kinks and connected at a height compatible with the model instructions, usually within an approximate range of 60 to 100 centimeters. An excessively high installation, an unsuitable extension or a blocked household trap can cause the same symptoms.
How to check the drain without causing damage
Before handling any component, switch off the washer dryer and unplug it from the power supply. If water remains in the drum, slowly open the filter cover with a container underneath and several cloths ready. Water may flow out suddenly, especially when the appliance is full, so do not force the cap or tilt the machine unnecessarily.
Remove the filter according to the direction shown by the manufacturer, clear away the debris and check that the small pump impeller is not blocked by an object. Clean the thread and refit it firmly. Then inspect the rear hose: it must be clear, without kinks or pressure against the wall. It is also useful to check the pipe or trap where the appliance drains, because the blockage may be outside the washing machine.
Once everything is reassembled, run a short drain or spin program without laundry. If the water leaves normally and the warning does not return, the problem was probably an obstruction. Do not insert wires, aggressive chemicals or tools into the hose: they can damage seals, impellers or level sensors and may push the blockage into a harder-to-reach area.
When cleaning becomes a genuine fault
If E18 returns after cleaning the filter, checking the hose and inspecting the household drain, attention should turn to the drain pump, pressure switch or wiring. The pressure switch reports the water level; when it fails, the electronics may interpret the tub as still full even when drainage appears normal.
Leaks, a burnt plastic smell, metallic noises or a pump that does not respond are reasons to stop testing. Reaching internal parts involves removing panels and working near electrical connections, so replacement should be handled by a qualified technician. The exact model and its E-Nr number help identify the compatible part, since pumps are not identical across all Balay series.
Prevention is straightforward: empty pockets, avoid overloading the drum and inspect the filter every two or three months under normal household use, more often if you have pets or fabrics that shed heavily. This routine keeps the circuit clear and reduces the chance that a small object becomes a complete interruption to washing and drying.
