Error 15 on Xiaomi Scooter: Causes and Solutions

The warning is linked to the brake and may have a simple fix, although it can also reveal an electrical fault.

The code 15 shown on a Xiaomi scooter identifies an abnormal reading from the brake lever sensor. For safety, the controller interprets the brake as engaged and disables the motor, so the vehicle may turn on, beep and fail to respond to the throttle.

If you have a problem with your electric scooter, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the brake system warning means

In compatible Xiaomi models, the lever contains a small switch or sensor that tells the controller whether the brake is released or pressed. The warning appears when that signal remains active, arrives irregularly or disappears because of a circuit problem. It does not necessarily mean that the pads or disc are worn.

The most common reaction is that the motor stops delivering power. This is logical: if the system cannot confirm that the lever is released, allowing acceleration could cause an unexpected start. The number may appear as 15 or 1-5, depending on the display and firmware version.

Simple checks before disassembly

Turn the scooter off and inspect the left lever. It should fully return to its original position after release, without feeling stiff, twisted or slightly depressed. Sometimes a poorly positioned grip, accumulated dirt or an impact keeps the mechanism pressed even though the brake appears to work normally.

Turn the vehicle on again without touching the lever or throttle. If the error disappears, the cause was probably the lever position or accidental pressure during startup. It is also worth checking that the cable does not become tight when the handlebar turns, since this movement can affect a weakened connection.

Wiring, connector and sensor: locating the fault

With the scooter switched off, visually inspect the cable leaving the lever and running toward the display or stem. Look for cuts, pinched areas, crushed sections, lifted insulation and signs of moisture. A partly loose connector can cause an intermittent fault, especially after a fall, strong vibration or folding transport.

The brake sensor may also have shifted or failed internally. In some assemblies, the mechanism relies on a magnet and a detector; if the magnet comes loose or moves out of position, the reading becomes unreliable. Do not bypass the sensor to remove the warning: that modification disables an important protection and may prevent the motor from cutting out automatically when braking.

When to leave the repair to a technician

If the code returns after releasing the lever and checking the connections, the usual solution is to replace the complete lever or the sensor compatible with the exact model. Xiaomi M365, Essential, 1S, Pro 2 and Mi Electric Scooter 3 may use different parts or connectors.

The repair requires disconnecting the battery before handling the wiring and carrying out a static test afterward. A workshop should verify that the wheel does not accelerate with the brake engaged and that the motor cuts assistance when the lever is pressed. Do not ride with the warning active, even if the scooter appears to move, because an incorrect brake reading can return while riding.

A small code with a decisive function

Warning 15 usually does not indicate a motor or battery failure, but rather a problem in the circuit confirming brake status. A released lever, undamaged cable and secure connector solve the simplest cases; when the sensor is broken, replacing the correct assembly is safer than trying to remove the alarm through software.

The key is distinguishing accidental activation from a defective electrical signal. That difference avoids replacing unnecessary parts and, above all, confirms that the braking system must take priority over any attempt to accelerate again.
