How Whirlpool dryers interpret their warnings

Whirlpool dryers use a fairly straightforward self-diagnosis logic. When the appliance detects an anomaly, the display or LED indicators do not describe generic symptoms but rather point to the specific fault family: electrical supply, communication between boards, temperature, motor, humidity, or ventilation.

There are two important details that change the diagnosis significantly: whether the dryer is electric or gas, and whether it uses a heat pump or conventional venting. What the most common codes mean in practice

F30 – Restricted airflow

This code usually indicates that air is not circulating properly. Common causes include a saturated lint filter, a clogged condenser, or a crushed or blocked external vent. The dryer runs hotter and longer, stressing the motor and increasing the risk of overheating. Laundry may come out warm and damp despite extended drying times.

F07 – Drum rotation failure

This error signals that the drum is not turning as expected. Possible causes include a broken or slack belt, jammed rollers, a faulty motor, or a rotation sensor issue. If you can manually turn the drum without abnormal resistance, the problem may lie in the control system or electronic rotation detection.

F28 and F29 – Moisture sensor errors

These codes appear frequently in automatic drying cycles. The moisture detection system fails to provide accurate readings, causing the dryer to stop too early or overdry clothes. This often affects thick items that retain moisture internally despite feeling dry outside. Cleaning or inspecting the moisture sensor and its wiring is recommended.

PF – Power failure

Indicates a power interruption during the drying cycle. Often, simply resuming the cycle is enough to continue. Frequent outages suggest external electrical issues such as loose plugs, unstable outlets, or home power fluctuations.

When the dryer dries poorly but shows no error code

Sometimes, the dryer finishes early or leaves clothes damp without displaying any error. In these cases, dirt accumulation is usually the culprit. Lint buildup acts like dust on a radiator, restricting airflow and forcing the system to work harder. For models with humidity sensors, residue from fabric softener, detergent, or limescale on the sensor’s metal strips can falsely signal that drying is complete.

What to check before disassembling anything

Before considering expensive repairs such as replacing the main board or motor, start with the visible and accessible parts. Check the lint trap, rear grille, exhaust duct, and any external vents for blockages or dirt. Cleaning these areas often resolves common faults related to overheating, extended drying times, or airflow restrictions.

Also inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for visible damage or looseness, which can cause intermittent faults or communication errors.
