Lavadora Balay con el filtro de desagüe abierto por el error E18

When a Balay washing machine displays E18 and leaves water in the drum, the problem is usually in the drainage system. The appliance could not remove the water within the expected time and stops the program to protect the pump and prevent the cycle from continuing with a full drum.

If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the E18 code means on a Balay washing machine

The E18 warning, which may appear as F18 on some series, does not identify one single fault. It describes drainage that is too slow or blocked, often caused by lint, coins, buttons, pet hair or other objects trapped in the pump filter.

The rear hose, the household drain trap or the drain pump itself may also be involved. The symptoms are usually easy to recognize: the program stops before spinning, a humming sound can be heard without water leaving, the clothes remain soaked and the door stays locked for safety.

The most common causes and what to check

The lower filter is the first point worth checking. It acts as a small barrier against residue from pockets and fabrics, but when it becomes saturated it reduces the flow until the washing machine detects a fault. In many cases, cleaning the filter solves E18 without replacing any part.

The hose may also be bent, crushed against the wall or installed at an unsuitable height. In a domestic installation it is usually positioned around 60 to 100 centimeters above the floor, although the exact measurement should be checked in the model manual. A blocked drain trap has a similar effect: the machine works, but the water has no clear exit.

How to drain and clean the washing machine safely

Before doing anything, switch off the appliance and unplug it. Place a container under the filter cover and several absorbent cloths nearby, because a substantial amount of water may come out. If your Balay has an emergency drain hose, use it first; otherwise, open the filter very slowly to control the flow.

Remove the filter, clear away the debris and clean both the thread and the inner housing. Carefully check that the pump impeller can move, without forcing it or inserting metal tools. Then refit the filter correctly and inspect the hose for kinks. A short drain or spin cycle without laundry will show whether the water is leaving normally.

Do not open panels or dismantle the pump while the appliance is connected. It is also not advisable to tilt the washing machine sharply to empty it, since water could reach electrical components or leak through areas not designed for drainage.

When E18 requires professional inspection

If the code returns after cleaning the filter, checking the hose and inspecting the wall drain, the cause may be a failed pump, faulty pressure switch or electrical problem. The pressure switch reports the water level, and diagnosing it requires measurements and partial disassembly.

Testing should also stop if there are leaks, a burning smell, metallic noises or persistent humming. Replacing the pump without confirming the exact model can create unnecessary expense; the E-Nr reference on the appliance label identifies the compatible spare part and prevents fitting the wrong component.

Habits that reduce future blockages

Emptying pockets, closing zippers and checking small garments prevents hard objects from reaching the filter. Laundry bags are useful for socks and delicate clothing, while removing pet hair before loading the garments reduces residue buildup. These are simple actions, but they protect a part that works during every cycle.

Checking the filter every two or three months under normal household use helps maintain the outlet flow, with shorter intervals if there are young children or pets at home. Keeping the rear area clear and avoiding pressure on the hose completes this maintenance. E18 is rarely a catastrophic warning; it is mainly a sign that the water needs to regain its normal way out.
