My Xiaomi scooter beeps and will not work: causes and fix
Find out what your Xiaomi scooter beeps mean and when it should be stopped or inspected.

A Xiaomi scooter that beeps and stops accelerating is not making a random sound: its diagnostic system has detected an abnormality and communicates it through an acoustic sequence, a dashboard code or an app alert. The priority is to stop, switch it off and avoid riding until you know whether the cause is the battery, motor, brake or electronics.
If you have a problem with your electric scooter, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What Xiaomi scooter beeps mean
In the M365, Essential, 1S, Pro, Pro 2, Lite and Mi Electric Scooter 3 models, beeps generally work as a coded reading. A long beep represents the first digit and short beeps the second; for example, one long signal followed by four short ones normally equals error 14. Models with a display show this information directly, although some modified displays may show the battery percentage or another value instead of a real error code.
A single beep on startup may be normal, but a continuous alarm, loss of acceleration or a flashing rear light indicates that the vehicle has entered protection mode. Moisture is a frequent cause: washing the scooter with a hose, riding through deep puddles or storing it wet can corrode connectors and affect communication between boards. Do not open the battery or connect a charger other than the one recommended by Xiaomi.
Most common error codes and their causes
Errors 10, 11, 12 and 13 point to communication with the dashboard or to the motor current phases. Error 14 concerns the accelerator sensor and 15 the brake lever sensor; a bent cable, loose connector or misaligned lever may be enough to prevent startup. Error 18 is usually related to the Hall sensor, wiring or motor itself, so it requires a technical inspection.
Codes 21, 22 and 24 affect communication with the battery, the BMS password and system voltage. The BMS is the board that controls cell charging and discharging. Errors 27, 28 and 29 usually indicate controller or MOSFET problems, while error 35 may appear when the serial number does not match after replacing components or modifying firmware. Codes 39 and 40 warn of abnormal battery or controller temperature; switch the scooter off and let it cool down, never cover or charge it in that condition.
Safe checks before repairing it
With the scooter switched off, check that the charger shows its usual indicator and look for moisture, a burnt smell or heat around the charging port and housing. Also check that the brake lever returns fully to its position and that the throttle is not being pressed by the grip. A locked wheel, engaged brake or stuck throttle can prevent operation without a major failure.
The Mi Home app may provide additional information and confirm whether the device is paired, locked or waiting for an update. However, do not install alternative firmware or disconnect cables at random: an interrupted process can disable the controller. If the sound remains after drying the vehicle, charging it with its compatible adapter and restarting it, the inspection should cover the battery, wiring, sensors and electronic board. Battery and temperature faults are not suitable for a home repair.
When to stop using it and arrange an inspection
The scooter should remain out of service if it beeps continuously, switches off while moving, suddenly loses power, smells of burnt plastic or becomes hotter than usual. It is also wise to stop using it if the brake light stays on while the vehicle is switched off. These signs may indicate a short circuit or insulation failure.
Recording the exact beep sequence, model and any recent intervention —such as replacing the display, battery or firmware— makes diagnosis easier. The sound alone does not identify the part that needs replacing: the same symptom may come from a connector, sensor or controller. A proper repair starts with measurements and checks, not with replacing components blindly.
