The role of condensation and cold weather in startup failures

Condensing boilers have become more common thanks to their efficiency, but their design also introduces a sensitive point: condensate drainage. When the temperature drops very low, the condensate pipe or siphon can freeze and block startup. The boiler detects that it cannot properly manage the combustion residue water and protects itself by shutting down or refusing to begin the cycle.

This problem usually appears during periods of intense cold or when the condensate outlet is in a poorly insulated area. The symptom is not always immediately obvious; sometimes the boiler seems to want to start and then stops with a lockout warning. In winter, that small pipe can act like an invisible ice plug that paralyzes the entire system.

Humidity also plays a role. A very humid environment, small leaks, or poorly resolved drainage can affect sensors and connections.
