The basic conversion is simple: 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters. Thus, a 32-inch TV has a diagonal of 81.28 cm, a 55-inch TV reaches 139.7 cm, and a 65-inch TV reaches 165.1 cm. That number, however, does not describe the width or height of the complete device. In a narrow living room, that difference can be the dividing line between a clean installation and a piece of furniture that feels too small or unbalanced.
It is also worth distinguishing between the usable screen and the television as a whole. Modern bezels are much thinner than they were a decade ago, but variations between models still exist. On top of that, there is the thickness, the stand, or VESA mount compatibility. That is why two televisions with the same diagonal may require slightly different support spaces, especially if one has a central base and the other two feet at the ends.
From inches to centimeters without losing sight of width and height
The quickest conversion is to multiply the inches by 2.54. That calculation gives the exact diagonal in centimeters and helps you understand the nominal size, but it does not solve the physical fit at home. To estimate the width and height of a standard 16:9 widescreen panel, the most common ratio today, approximate formulas are used that make it possible to predict with fairly good accuracy the space the screen will occupy.
In a 16:9 television, the width is usually around 0.872 of the diagonal and the height, approximately 0.490. In other words, the screen extends more horizontally than vertically, like a wide, low window designed for movies, series, and video games. If we take a 55-inch TV, the diagonal in centimeters is 139.7; the screen width comes out to about 121.8 cm and the height to about 68.5 cm. These are very useful values for deciding whether it fits on a piece of furniture, between two columns, or inside a built-in niche.
The key is not to confuse the commercial dimension with the useful dimension. A television can be advertised as 50 inches and still need a piece of furniture more than 110 cm wide once the base is taken into account. For domestic purposes, the fine adjustment matters almost more than the nominal size itself. A few centimeters of margin can prevent a forced installation, an unstable stand, or a screen that sits too close to the edge.

The most common sizes on the market follow a fairly stable logic and, aside from design differences between manufacturers, the figures are very similar. 32 inches: 81.3 cm diagonal, 70.8 cm wide, and 39.8 cm high. 40 inches: 101.6 cm diagonal, 88.6 cm wide, and 49.8 cm high. 43 inches: 109.2 cm diagonal, 95.2 cm wide, and 53.5 cm high. 48 inches: 121.9 cm diagonal, 106.3 cm wide, and 59.8 cm high. 50 inches: 127 cm diagonal, 110.7 cm wide, and 62.3 cm high.
55 inches: 139.7 cm diagonal, 121.8 cm wide, and 68.5 cm high. 60 inches: 152.4 cm diagonal, 132.8 cm wide, and 74.7 cm high. 65 inches: 165.1 cm diagonal, 143.9 cm wide, and 80.9 cm high. 75 inches: 190.5 cm diagonal, 166 cm wide, and 93.4 cm high. 85 inches: 215.9 cm diagonal, 188.2 cm wide, and 105.8 cm high.
If the list is expanded with less common formats, sizes such as 24 inches also appear, with about 60.96 cm diagonal, 53.1 cm wide, and 29.9 cm high; 28 inches, with 71.1 cm diagonal, 62 cm wide, and 34.9 cm high; or 70 inches, with 177.8 cm diagonal, 155 cm wide, and 87.2 cm high. These measurements help you read catalogs and technical sheets more easily, especially when the manufacturer gives the diagonal but does not clear up doubts about the final size.
How much space each television takes up in real life
The figures in the previous table describe the panel, but in a home the television never lives alone. It has to coexist with the furniture, the distance to the sofa, the wall, power outlets, and the flow of the space. A 55-inch TV may seem restrained on a large wall, but bulky in a small room. A 32-inch one, on the other hand, may feel too small in a bright living room with distant sofas and high ceilings. Visual size depends as much on the environment as on the diagonal.
That is why the same model can look balanced in one room and tiny in another. It is not just a matter of centimeters, but of proportion. A 65-inch TV, with a width close to 144 cm, usually feels comfortable in medium and large living rooms, while a 43-inch one, about 95 cm wide, works better in compact spaces, large kitchens, or bedrooms where the viewing distance is shorter. You also have to think about the base. Two feet at the ends require a wider piece of furniture than a central stand. Some modern, very slim televisions rest on supports that take up little depth but a lot of lateral width. Others, by contrast, are supported by a heavy central foot that makes fitting them easier. Before buying, the decisive figure is not just how wide the screen is, but how wide the fully assembled set is.
Viewing distance and space proportion
The correct distance does not depend only on subjective comfort. Resolution also matters. On a 4K television, pixel density allows you to sit closer without losing sharpness, which changes quite a bit compared with a Full HD panel. As a practical reference, a distance between 1.5 and 2.5 times the diagonal usually works well in most homes, although the range can be adjusted depending on the content and the size of the living room.
On a 55-inch TV, that means a comfortable viewing distance that is usually around 2 meters or a bit more, depending on the resolution and the user’s preference. For a 65-inch screen, the ideal distance is around 2.3 or 2.5 meters in many home living rooms. On a 75-inch one, the sofa usually ends up reasonably at about 2.8 meters. It is not a rigid rule, but it is a solid guide to avoid extremes: neither too close, nor so far that the screen looks like a wall frame.
Height also matters. The usual recommendation is to place the center of the screen approximately at eye level when seated. In bedrooms, the most sensible sizes usually range between 32 and 43 inches, although a large room may accommodate something bigger. There, the criterion changes: the viewing distance is shorter and a very large screen can dominate the room aggressively. A 40- or 43-inch panel, with approximate widths of 89 and 95 cm respectively, usually solves the problem well without imposing an excessive presence. The room matters more than fashion.
In small spaces, ventilation and cable access become more important. Leaving 10 to 15 cm free on each side of the screen helps the set breathe and keeps the installation from looking boxed in.
