My electric scooter will not turn off: causes and fixes

When the scooter remains powered on after pressing the button, do not try to force it off or continue riding. The cause is usually the power button, display, controller or a damaged connection; in some cases, moisture or a short circuit keeps the power circuit active. Move the vehicle away from traffic, unplug the charger and avoid handling the battery until the fault is located.

Why the scooter stays on and what to do

The simplest cause is a stuck, dirty or worn power button. Dust, moisture or internal wear can leave the switch pressed, while the display may still receive power even though the button no longer sends the shutdown command correctly. Press it once without holding it down and check whether the indicator changes. If the button is recessed, feels unusual or does not return to position, it needs inspection.

There may also be an interruption in the shutdown circuit. A loose connector around the handlebar, a cable pinched during folding or water ingress can cause the controller to keep powering the display. Do not dismantle the deck or bridge wires: lithium batteries can deliver very high currents, and an incorrect connection may cause sparks, burns or fire.

Safe checks before taking it for repair

With the scooter stationary, unplug the charger and let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes. Hold the button for 10 seconds only if your model manual includes this reset procedure; some manufacturers use it to reset the display, but not all systems respond in the same way. If the motor turns, the throttle responds or an error code appears, do not test it while riding.

Inspect the charging port, the cable leading to the handlebar and visible connections from the outside. Look for moisture, a hot-plastic smell, dark marks, corrosion or cut wires. If the scooter stopped behaving normally after riding in rain or being cleaned with water, leave it in a dry, ventilated place without applying direct heat. A display that stays lit together with the lights usually points to the controller or power wiring, not simply a low charge.

When the button does not respond, the reset fails and the vehicle remains active, battery disconnection should be performed by an experienced technician. On models with a physical switch or accessible fuse, the manual may specify a particular procedure, but never replace a fuse with one rated for a higher current. Repairing a button or connector may cost approximately 20 to 60 euros; a display or controller often costs between 40 and 150 euros, depending on the brand and availability.

When the fault may be related to the battery

A degraded battery usually causes shutdowns, reduced range or cutouts under acceleration, but it is not the most common explanation when the system stays on. Even so, a defective BMS, the circuit that protects the cells, may send incorrect information to the controller and keep part of the electronics active. The charge percentage may also jump, freeze or show inconsistent values.

Do not open the battery pack to measure cells or charge it if it is swollen, hot, wet or smells chemical. A 36-volt battery reaches about 42 volts when fully charged, while a 48-volt battery reaches approximately 54.6 volts, but these figures do not justify a home test inside the compartment. Safety must come before a quick diagnosis, especially after an impact, flooding or previous repair.

The fault needs prompt attention if the scooter ignores the button, switches on by itself, makes clicking sounds, heats up while stationary or keeps the motor active. In these conditions, store it away from flammable materials and arrange a professional inspection. Correct shutdown does not depend on draining the battery: it depends on the switch, controller and electrical protections communicating without faults.
