In a refrigerator with a dial from 1 to 7, the highest number usually cools more. In the vast majority of household models, 1 is the least cold setting and 7 is the coldest, although the exact number does not represent real degrees but rather a thermostat power setting. That difference matters, because a simple turn of the dial can change everything from proper preservation to drinks that are half frozen, fruit touching ice, or a compressor working too hard.

The most useful reference for home use remains simple: the refrigeration zone should be around 4 °C and the freezer around -18 °C. In an appliance with a numeric scale, that midpoint is usually the best starting point, but not always the final one. The food load, kitchen temperature, how often the door is opened, and the type of refrigerator all affect the actual result. That is why understanding what each number does saves food, energy, and headaches.
