A filter with fine dust, a tangled roller, or a hose with compacted debris reduces airflow and forces the motor to work longer to achieve the same result. This invisible wear translates into a very concrete feeling: the vacuum stops picking up light dirt, drags heavier debris, and seems to get tired before finishing the job.
The odor problem also appears. Household dust does not come alone: it carries moisture, pet hair, tiny organic remains, and kitchen particles that, over the days, become a heavy and easily recognizable mixture. If that mixture stays in the canister or in a damp filter, the vacuum can expel air with a stale smell, a domestic problem as annoying as it is easy to prevent.

If the part allows it, it can be washed with water and mild soap, but always with complete drying before reassembly. The inside must be completely dry; otherwise, moisture becomes an invitation for bad smells and, over time, sticky deposits that are difficult to remove.
Crevice tools, dust brushes, and upholstery accessories also accumulate residue. Disinfecting them makes sense when they have come into contact with organic remains, moisture, or kitchen areas. A cloth lightly dampened with a mild solution and then air-dried is usually enough. The important thing is not to saturate the joints with liquid, because in a vacuum cleaner, moisture stays where it should not.
How to disinfect without damaging filters or plastics
Disinfecting does not mean soaking. In a vacuum cleaner, excess liquid can deform parts, alter foams, or leave residue in corners that later turns into trapped odor. The wisest approach is to separate washable parts from electronic ones and handle each delicately. On the outer shell, a clean cloth and a neutral detergent are enough; on the canister, warm water and thorough drying; on the brush, manual removal and spot cleaning.
White vinegar and baking soda can help, but they do not replace drying. The first neutralizes light odors in washable parts; the second helps absorb residual moisture and break down certain persistent smells. Even so, neither fixes an interior that has not been dried properly. Effective disinfection depends more on ventilation and time than on a miracle mixture.
Particular care should be taken with HEPA filters and any foam component. Many do not tolerate intense washing or harsh products. If the manufacturer allows water, rinsing should be gentle and drying prolonged. If it does not, the correct approach is to shake it out, brush it dry, or replace the part when it loses effectiveness.
