Regular cleaning solves more cases than it seems. A smell of hot plastic, sparks, strange noises, unexpected shutoffs, or dark marks in the upper area are more serious indicators than the occasional smoke from grease. If the appliance heats unevenly or the interior surface shows visible wear, continuing to use it does not just make the problem worse; it can compromise the safety of the appliance and the kitchen environment. The age of the appliance affects the diagnosis. An air fryer that has seen heavy use accumulates grease where you cannot see it and may have parts fatigued by repeated heat.
