Reversed 9 error on a Balay induction hob: causes
The warning is usually linked to the power electronics, not the cookware. Find out which checks are safest.

When a Balay hob shows a symbol resembling a reversed 9, often accompanied by a blinking zero, the most likely cause is communication between the controls and the power module. It is usually not a cookware problem or a simple touch-control lock. On many models, only two zones stop working while the third remains operational.
The location of the fault provides an important clue: induction hobs often divide their cooking zones into independent modules. Therefore, two zones on the same side failing points to a fault in that electronic stage, although the exact diagnosis depends on the model and production number.
If you have a problem with your induction hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the symbol resembling a 9 really means
A hob display does not always show codes as clearly as a printed manual. The character may look like a reversed 9, an E9 or a combination of illuminated segments. On Balay models using this architecture, the warning usually means that the power module is not responding correctly to the control system.
The cause may be a switching power regulator, resistor, protection diode, resonant capacitor or the power circuit itself. It can also appear after a voltage surge, storm or power interruption, but the fault cannot be attributed to a mains spike without checking the damaged components and the electrical installation.
Safe checks before requesting a repair
The first check is to switch the hob off at the electrical panel and leave it without power for several minutes. A reset lasting 30 minutes may clear a temporary lock, but it will not repair a burned component. If the warning returns when power is restored, repeated attempts to switch it on may place further strain on the electronics.
With the hob cold and disconnected, check that the glass is clean, no metal objects are resting on the controls and the ventilation underneath is unobstructed. It is also useful to consult the manual for the exact model: Balay codes and procedures may vary between series. The hob should not be opened to test IGBTs, capacitors or solder joints without experience, because some components may retain a charge and dangerous voltages can remain even after disconnection.
When the power module needs a technician
If only the zones on one side work, the warning returns after a reset or the fan keeps running without the hob heating, the diagnosis should focus on the power stage and its connections. A technician can check the supply, communication between modules and IGBT transistors with suitable instruments, as well as locate damage that is not visible.
Documented repairs on Balay models have found damaged switching regulators, diodes and capacitors; in other cases, replacing the complete module and programming it to recognize the rest of the hob is more reliable. The price is not fixed: as a reference, a repair involving module replacement may cost around 180 euros, although the final amount depends on the model, labor and part availability.
A hob that still works on one zone should not be considered completely safe if the warning remains, it smells unusual, trips the circuit breaker or leaves the fan running continuously. Disconnecting it and avoiding improvised repairs protects both the glass and the electrical installation. In this fault, identifying the affected module is usually more useful than replacing cookware or repeating unsuccessful resets.
