The ER22 code on a Balay ceramic hob usually means that the touch panel has detected moisture and locked the hob as a safety measure. It may appear after a spill, while cleaning the surface or when oven steam condenses near the controls. This protection prevents a touch command from being misread and activating a cooking zone without control.

If you have a problem with your ceramic hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

Why the ER22 warning appears on a Balay hob

The most common cause is water, oil, milk or cleaning product left on the control area. Even when the glass looks dry, a thin film can remain around the capacitive sensors. At that point, the control works like a wet touchscreen: it receives confusing signals, so the electronics stop the hob rather than risk activating a burner accidentally.

Condensation from cooking steam can also play a role, especially when the hob is installed above an oven and cabinet ventilation is poor. Opening a pot, cooking pasta or using the extractor can quickly raise humidity. A worn cable, a water-affected connection or a fault in the Touch Control are less common possibilities, but they should be considered if the error returns with the surface completely dry.

The moment when the code appears provides a useful clue. If it shows up just after cleaning or spilling liquid, the cause is probably external and temporary. If it appears every time the hob starts, even after several hours of rest, there may be internal moisture or an electronic fault requiring professional inspection.

How to clear error 22 on a Balay ceramic hob

Switch off the hob and remove any cookware from the control panel. Then clean the controls with a soft, dry cloth, without spraying products directly onto the glass. Pay attention to the edges of the touch symbols and the joint between the worktop and hob. The surface must be free of drops, grease and residue before testing it again.

The next step is to disconnect the electrical supply. If the plug is not accessible, switch off the relevant circuit breaker for at least 30 seconds; some models may benefit from several minutes without power. Restore the supply and turn on the hob without touching the controls for a few moments. This reset clears a temporary lock, but it will not repair a damaged sensor or persistent water ingress.

Ventilation also matters. Turn on the extractor, open a window and avoid using the oven for a while if it sends steam toward the underside of the hob. Do not use a hair dryer with very hot air or insert objects into the openings: concentrated heat can deform parts, damage seals or drive moisture further inside. The safe approach is to let the appliance dry naturally and keep the lower area clear.

When to stop using the hob and request assistance

If ER22 disappears and does not return after drying and resetting, the incident was probably related to surface moisture. Even so, monitor the hob during the next few uses and avoid spills near the controls. Careful cleaning with a small amount of liquid and a well-wrung cloth lowers the chance of the warning returning.

The situation is different if the code remains, appears immediately after power is restored or comes with beeps, sudden shutdowns, a burning smell or controls that activate by themselves. In these cases, disconnect the ceramic hob and do not remove the glass or inspect the wiring without electrical knowledge. The Touch Control is connected to mains power, and incorrect handling can cause an electric shock or worsen the fault.

The technician will need the exact model and product number, which are usually shown on the rating plate or in the appliance documents. Diagnosis can establish whether the touch panel needs replacing, a connection requires repair or the installation and ventilation need checking. ER22 does not automatically mean that the hob is beyond repair, but it does confirm that the electronic safety system has detected an abnormal condition that should not be ignored.

A small safety feature that prevents a bigger problem

The 22 warning can be confusing because it often appears hours after cooking, when no visible water remains. Its logic, however, is clear: the hob locks the controls before it loses control. Proper drying, disconnecting the power for a few seconds and improving steam extraction solve many cases without touching the electronics.

When these measures fail, repeatedly resetting the appliance or applying direct heat only delays a necessary diagnosis. A Balay hob that keeps displaying ER22 deserves a safe inspection, especially if the error appears without any visible spill or condensation. Prevention here does not mean forcing the appliance to work, but respecting the signal sent by its own protection system.
