What the U40 warning indicates on a Balay hob

Induction hobs need a stable electrical supply and a correctly configured connection. When the electronics detect that the voltage, phases or internal communication do not match the expected parameters, they may stop operation and show a U-family code. For that reason, U40 should not immediately be treated as a pan or cooking-zone fault without first checking the installation.

The message may appear after the hob is installed for the first time, after the worktop is changed or when power returns after a circuit-breaker trip. It can also result from a loose wire, an incorrect connection, unsuitable voltage or an electronic module that is no longer communicating properly with the touch control.

Photograph the panel when the message appears and note whether it occurs during startup, when selecting a zone or after cooking. This context helps distinguish a power-supply issue from a localised fault and avoids unnecessary part replacements.

The code should not simply be cleared so cooking can continue if it returns. A hob that locks itself is protecting its electronics from a condition it considers abnormal.
