The detergent drawer is usually divided into three areas: I is for prewash, II is for detergent used in the main wash and the flower icon is for fabric softener. Placing each product in the correct compartment prevents detergent from being released too early or softener from mixing with the initial water.

The selector normally identifies programs by name, although some panels also include drawings. Cotton is intended for durable fabrics; Synthetics handles mixed fibers; Wool and Delicates reduce movement intensity. The spiral indicates spin, the tub with water indicates rinsing and the drain option removes water without washing the clothes. A key or padlock symbol means the child lock is active, not that the machine has failed.

Cycle lights show whether the machine is washing, rinsing, spinning or finished. The display may also show the remaining time, temperature, spin speed and recommended load. Four dashes in the spin setting mean that there will be no final spin and the clothes will remain in the water from the last rinse.

Balay error codes: what to check first

Codes E17, F17 or a tap symbol usually relate to water entering the machine. Check that the tap is fully open, the hose is not kinked and the small inlet filter is not blocked. Codes E18 and F18 commonly point to drainage problems: inspect the drain hose and clean the pump filter with the machine unplugged.

Code E16 generally indicates a door-lock problem. A garment caught between the seal and glass can prevent locking, although a worn latch can produce the same warning. E02 and F43 are associated with the motor; if the drum does not turn, smells burnt or makes unusual noises, do not keep starting new cycles.

On models with automatic dosing, E10 may indicate a blockage in the system pump. Other warnings, such as E36 or E61, require greater caution because they may involve drainage, excess detergent or electronics. Code equivalence is not absolute: the manual for the specific E-Nr. takes priority over any general table.

How to respond to a warning without damaging the machine

A restart can rule out a temporary fault: switch off the washing machine, unplug it for a few minutes and try again only after checking that there is no standing water or leak. To open the drain filter, place a container under the lower cover and an absorbent cloth nearby; several liters of water and objects such as coins, buttons or lint may come out.

Do not remove the casing to inspect the motor, heating element or electronic board. Smoke, sparks, a burnt-wire smell, a major leak or a locked drum are signs to stop using the machine and request technical assistance. On models without a display, flashing lights communicate the fault, but their meaning depends on the model and must be confirmed in the instructions.

The manual remains the decisive reference
