Balay TW 5512: what F18 means and how to fix it

The code is usually caused by a blocked drain, although it can also indicate a worn pump.

Filtro de desagüe abierto en una lavadora Balay con aviso de error F18

The F18 code on the Balay TW 5512 washer-dryer generally indicates that the appliance cannot drain the water within the expected time. The program may stop before the spin cycle, leave clothes soaked and keep the door locked while water remains in the drum.

What F18 means on the Balay TW 5512

The warning does not identify one specific part, but rather a problem in the drainage circuit. Water must travel from the tub to the pump, through the outlet hose and into the household drain. If the level does not fall quickly enough, the system stops the cycle to prevent the pump from running for too long.

On older models or similar versions, the same problem may appear as E18. The practical meaning is equivalent: water remains in the appliance or draining is too slow. A restart may clear a temporary reading, but it cannot remove a physical blockage or repair a worn component.

The filter, hose and pump are the main causes

The pump filter is the first point to inspect. Coins, hairpins, buttons, lint and small textile remnants can block the internal impeller. Before opening it, unplug the washer and place a shallow tray or several towels underneath, because a considerable amount of residual water may escape.

The drain hose can also explain the warning. A sharp bend, pressure against the wall or a blocked siphon reduces water flow. The outlet should remain secure, without tension, and at a suitable installation height; documentation for this appliance family allows a maximum difference of around 100 centimeters between the machine and the drain point.

When the filter and hose are clear, the pump becomes the main suspect. A weak hum, repeated knocks or complete silence during draining can all indicate a problem: the impeller is jammed, the motor has lost power or it is not receiving electricity. Excess detergent can create persistent foam and extend rinses, although this is usually less common than a blockage.

Safe checks before requesting a repair

With the appliance unplugged, clean the filter carefully and make sure its cap is properly tightened again. Then inspect the external hose and the household drain. A short drain-program test can show whether water flows continuously, but do not force several cycles if the drum remains full.

Detergent dosage should match the load, soil level and water hardness. Small loads with too much product encourage foam and may affect drainage. After correcting this, a maintenance wash with a small amount of detergent can remove residue, but it does not replace a mechanical inspection if the code returns.

A complete shutdown for about 10 minutes can rule out a temporary electronic lockup. If F18 returns at the same stage, the cause is probably persistent. Testing pump voltage, wiring continuity or the water-level sensor requires tools and experience; opening the cabinet without isolating the power creates a risk of electric shock and board damage.

When the error is no longer a household issue

Professional attention is appropriate when the filter is clean, the drain works and the pump does not evacuate, makes unusual noises or overheats. The pressure switch, which monitors water level, should also be checked, along with the wiring and electronic module. Not every case requires a new pump, so diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary part replacement.

Stop using the appliance if it retains water after several attempts, if the door remains locked or if the error appears on every program. Trapped moisture encourages bad odors and places continuous strain on the pump. On the Balay TW 5512, F18 is therefore a clear signal: the cycle cannot continue until normal draining is restored.
