E22 error on a Balay induction hob: causes and solution
The E22 code may clear after moisture is removed, although some cases require an electronic inspection.

The E22 code on a Balay induction hob usually appears when the system detects moisture on the surface, touch controls or electronics. A spill, steam from a pot or poor ventilation during installation can trigger it, although the exact meaning may vary by model. The first step is to switch the appliance off and disconnect its power before checking anything else.
If you have a problem with your induction hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the E22 code indicates on a Balay hob
On many models, E22 is linked to an incorrect control-panel reading caused by moisture. The touch panel must detect every press accurately; an almost invisible film of water or grease can interfere with that reading and make the appliance lock itself as a precaution.
The source is not always a liquid spilled directly onto the hob. Steam from a pan, condensation beneath the worktop, an overly wet cloth or a nearby leak can carry moisture into sensitive areas. Poor ventilation beneath the hob can also contribute, particularly when the cabinet prevents heat from escaping properly.
The code should be interpreted carefully: Balay uses different electronic platforms, and its meaning may vary between references. The appliance manual is therefore the final reference. If E22 returns when the surface is completely dry, it should not automatically be blamed on water; there may be a persistent control-module fault.
How to clear the E22 error without risking the hob
Switch the hob off using its normal control and disconnect the circuit at the electrical panel. Leaving it in standby is not always enough, because some components may still be powered. Keep the appliance disconnected for at least five minutes, and do not turn it on immediately if a large amount of water was spilled or liquid entered around the edges.
With the power disconnected, clean the glass with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Pay attention to the sensor area, frame and seals, where drops can remain hidden. Avoid scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, direct sprays and very hot air from a hair dryer: intense heat can damage the glass, seals or circuits.
Allow the hob to air-dry naturally before restoring power. Remove any source of steam nearby and check that the lower vents are not blocked by objects or a badly positioned drawer. If the code disappears after the reset and does not return during several uses, it was probably a temporary moisture issue.
When E22 needs professional inspection
The situation is different if the message appears as soon as the appliance is connected, the controls do not respond, clicking sounds are heard or there is a hot-plastic smell. In these cases, disconnect the power and stop testing. An induction hob contains high-voltage parts that may retain charge, so opening the casing is not a safe household repair.
A technician should also inspect a hob that shows E22 after several hours of drying or displays it only on certain zones. The professional can test the touch panel, connectors, power module and insulation, while looking for corrosion. Replacing a part without confirming the cause can increase the repair cost without solving the fault.
Before requesting assistance, record the appliance reference, when the code appears and what happened beforehand, such as a spill or cleaning. This helps diagnosis. The combination of careful drying, an electrical reset and an installation check resolves simple cases; when the warning persists, leave the hob unused until its source is identified.
A small warning behind a problem worth taking seriously
E22 does not automatically mean that the Balay hob is beyond repair. It often acts as a barrier against moisture, like a warning light that appears before the problem reaches the electronics. Ignoring it or repeatedly switching the appliance on can, however, turn a minor incident into a more expensive repair.
Keeping ventilation clear, wiping spills promptly and preventing steam from collecting beneath the worktop can help prevent further appearances. The key is to distinguish between an isolated warning that disappears after drying and a code that returns: that difference marks the line between a simple check and a technical repair.
