Error 4 on a Balay dishwasher: causes and solution
The E04 code points to an electronic fault: find out what you can check and when to stop.

When a Balay dishwasher displays E04, E4 or an equivalent indication, the appliance is reporting an electronic fault. On models from the BSH group, this warning is often linked to the control board or to the circuit that monitors heating, so it should not be confused with a simple lack of water or a dirty filter.
The first step should be safe and straightforward: switch off the dishwasher, unplug it and wait a few minutes before reconnecting it. If the code disappears and the cycle finishes normally, it may have been a temporary lockup; if it returns, the fault needs technical diagnosis and the appliance should not be used as normal.

What the E04 code means on a Balay dishwasher
E04 usually points to an irregularity in the control electronics. The board receives information from sensors, the heating element and other components, and stops the program when it detects incompatible values. The source may be the board itself, a damaged connection or the heating system it monitors.
The heating element deserves particular attention because it warms the water during the cycle and works together with sensors and relays. Overheating, leakage or an incorrect reading can trigger the warning. The cause may also be a loose connector, moisture in a sensitive area or an ageing electronic component, issues that cannot be confirmed by looking at the display alone.
What you can check before requesting a repair
An electrical reset is the only reasonable household check to begin with. Disconnect the appliance from the mains, close the water inlet and let it cool completely. After about 10 minutes, reconnect it and select a short program without dishes. If E04 returns, the reset has not repaired the fault; it has only ruled out a temporary lockup.
You can also check that there is no water in the base, that the door closes properly and that the cable has no visible damage. These observations can help a technician, but they do not justify removing the casing. Testing the heating element or powering a component directly requires electrical knowledge, suitable equipment and protective procedures; doing so while connected can cause a shock or damage the board.
When to stop and what repair may be required
If the code appears immediately, the program stops or the appliance smells of overheated material, leave it unplugged. The inspection should cover the electronic board, wiring, temperature sensors and heating circuit. In some cases, correcting a connection is enough, while others require replacing the heating element or repairing the control board.
The correct part depends on the exact model and product number, usually shown on a label along the door edge. An incompatible replacement can cause new errors or compromise safety. A qualified technician can test the circuit without improvisation and decide whether repair is sensible given the appliance’s age.
An electronic warning that calls for caution
The E04 error has no universal solution based on cleaning a filter or holding down a button. Its meaning points to an electronic issue that may be temporary, but may also indicate a genuine fault in the heating system or control board. Unplugging, resetting once and watching whether the code returns is the prudent limit for a home check.
The display stops the cycle for a reason: to protect the dishwasher and prevent an electrical irregularity from affecting other components. Treating the warning calmly, keeping the exact model information and avoiding live electrical tests turns a confusing diagnosis into a safer and more accurate repair.
