The E90 code on a Balay dryer usually indicates a communication fault between electronic modules, although the exact meaning may vary by series and model. The machine may stop the program, fail to respond to the buttons or show a flashing display. It is not usually an alert that can be solved simply by cleaning the lint filter.

If you have a problem with your dryer, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the E90 code means on a Balay dryer

On different Balay models using BSH technology, the E90 warning, or the E28/90 variant found in some ranges, points to an issue with the electronic system or its sensors. The main board and control panel exchange information continuously: they receive the start command, control the motor and regulate temperature. When that communication is interrupted, the appliance protects itself and cancels the cycle.

The causes can vary. A loose internal connection, damaged wire, faulty control module or temporary power disturbance can produce the same message. The code may also appear after a power cut or surge without a permanent fault being present. Therefore, the code identifies a problem area but does not always determine which part must be replaced.

The dryer’s behavior provides useful clues. If the panel switches off, the drum never starts turning or the error returns immediately after switching on, attention should focus on the power supply and electronics. When it appears after several minutes, the diagnosis should also include sensors, motor and heating system, since an abnormal reading may cause the board to stop operation.

Safe checks before repairing the dryer

First switch off the dryer, turn the selector to the off position and disconnect it from the power supply for 15 to 20 minutes. Then connect it directly to a wall outlet, without power strips or extension leads, and test a short program. This reset can clear temporary memory locks, but it will not repair a damaged board.

While the appliance is unplugged, check the plug, power cord and wall outlet from the outside. It is also advisable to clean the lint filter, empty the condensation tank and make sure the door closes properly. These tasks do not normally correct an E90 by themselves, but they rule out conditions that can cause stops, incorrect readings or irregular operation. Never handle the inside while the dryer is connected to power.

On heat-pump models, the heat exchanger and air inlets must remain clear. Dirt is not the usual explanation for an E90, but it can increase drying times and produce out-of-range temperatures or signals. If the code disappears after the reset and does not return, monitor the next cycle; if it reappears, repeated resets will only delay the diagnosis.

When cables, the board or panel need inspection

Inspecting internal wiring requires removing covers and reaching connectors that may retain voltage. A technician will check conductor continuity, connector condition and the power reaching the modules. They may also look for moisture, burned areas or swollen components. A poorly seated connector can be a simple repair, while a faulty electronic board requires the exact appliance reference.

Replacing the board without testing first is not a reliable solution. Balay sells dryers with different configurations, and a visually similar part may not be programmed for the same model. The E-Nr number, usually found on the door frame label, identifies the correct spare part and service procedure. The control panel can also fail, but it should not be considered faulty simply because the display shows the code.

Professional assistance is particularly advisable if there is a burning smell, a tripped circuit breaker, a completely blank display, irregular heating or an immediate recurrence of the error. The cost depends on the appliance’s age, the part and labor; a loose connection is usually much cheaper than an electronic module. Before approving the work, it is sensible to request a diagnosis and written estimate, especially with dryers that have been used for several years.

Maintenance that helps prevent further stops

The lint filter should be cleaned after every cycle and washed with water when it accumulates softener residue. The condensation tank needs regular emptying, while the drum moisture sensors can be cleaned with a damp cloth and no abrasive products. Air circulation is essential for consistent electronic readings and for preventing unnecessarily long cycles.

It also helps to respect the maximum load, spin laundry properly and avoid installing the appliance in a room that is too cold or hot. On heat-pump dryers, ambient temperatures below 5 C or above 35 C can extend the program. These measures cannot guarantee that E90 will never return, but they reduce thermal and mechanical strain on the system. If the warning remains after the external checks, the safest decision is to stop using the appliance until the cause is known.
