Balay dishwasher brush symbol: causes and solution
The brush icon may be part of the normal cycle, although certain symptoms call for a closer inspection.
The brush symbol shown on a Balay dishwasher usually represents the washing phase, not a fault code. During the program, it may remain lit while the spray arms operate and disappear when rinsing or drying begins. The exact meaning varies by model and control panel, so also check whether the appliance stops, displays a code or leaves water in the tub.

What the brush symbol means on Balay dishwashers
On many Balay models, the brush drawing works as a progress indicator. It lights up during the most active part of the cycle, when the appliance takes in water, heats it and distributes it through the spray arms. Seeing it for a long time does not by itself mean there is a fault: Eco programs adjust their duration automatically and may remain in this phase for several hours.
The situation is different if the icon stays on for a long time and the dishwasher does not progress, fails to heat the water or beeps. It also deserves attention if the symbol flashes together with the tap indicator. In that case, the issue may involve the water inlet, a bent hose, a blocked filter or insufficient pressure, rather than the washing system itself.
Safe checks before looking for a fault
Before handling the appliance, cancel the program by holding the start button for about three seconds, provided the manual for your model confirms this function. Then wait for the draining process to finish. A reset can correct a temporary electronic lock, but it does not repair a physical cause if the indicator returns when another cycle starts.
With the dishwasher switched off, check that the tap is fully open and that the inlet hose is not crushed behind the cabinet. You can also clean the tub filter and check that the spray arms rotate freely without touching plates, cutlery or food debris. Built-up dirt reduces jet pressure and can make the appliance appear stuck in the brush phase.
If water remains at the bottom, inspect the filter, pump cover and drain hose. Errors E22, E24 and E25 are often linked to dirty filters, blockages, an incorrectly fitted cover or a jammed pump. Remove only visible debris and wear gloves: broken glass can remain hidden beneath the filter and cause cuts.
When the icon points to a real problem
The indicator requires technical assistance when the dishwasher does not heat, fails to drain, leaks or repeats the same behavior after a reset and cleaning. Code E09 points to the heating circuit; E15 usually indicates water in the lower safety tray, while E23 is generally associated with a drain pump fault. Meanings can vary between product lines, so the model manual remains the definitive reference.
If a leak is suspected, close the tap and disconnect the appliance from the power supply without removing the base. Do not repeatedly tilt it or bypass safety sensors: the AquaStop system is designed to limit the risk of flooding, and improvised intervention can worsen the damage. The electronics, heat pump and internal valves should be checked with suitable instruments, especially while the appliance is under warranty.
Simple maintenance helps the brush symbol perform its normal function without becoming a warning sign. Clean the filter at least once a month, adjust salt to the hardness of the water and avoid hand-dishwashing detergents, whose foam can activate overflow protection. On a Balay dishwasher, distinguishing between a normal indicator and a persistent code prevents unnecessary part replacements and supports safe troubleshooting.
