AEG washing machines typically require a water pressure between 2 and 4 bar. Below 2 bar, filling may be insufficient; above 4 bar, the system risks damage.
- Clogged inlet filters: Fine sand, limescale, rust, or debris accumulate in the small mesh filters at the water intake, narrowing the flow like a sieve.
- Hose issues: The inlet hose may be bent, pinched, twisted, or crushed behind the appliance or against walls, causing constrictions that reduce water flow.
- Faulty solenoid valve: This component opens and closes the water flow upon command from the control board. If the coil fails, the mechanism jams, or the electrical signal is interrupted, the valve may not open properly, resulting in no or partial filling.
- Pressure switch tube problems: This thin tube measures the air pressure generated by the water level in the tub. If it cracks, leaks, or becomes blocked, the machine may misread the water level and incorrectly assume that filling is not progressing.
What to check first without dismantling
Before considering replacement parts, start with simple and visible checks:
- Verify the tap is fully open. Disconnect the hose cautiously and check if the water stream is uniform and strong. This rules out many false alarms caused by supply issues.
- Inspect the inlet hose. Ensure it follows a natural path without tight bends, crushing, or signs of wear. In narrow spaces, hoses can get trapped or rubbed, reducing flow over time.
- Clean the inlet filters. Remove and clean the small mesh filters under running water with gentle brushing to remove limescale, rust, or debris.
- Check the AquaStop system. If your model has AquaStop, inspect the safety hose and its internal chambers. Blockages here may not be visible externally but can restrict flow.
Water pressure and its role in diagnosis
The proper water pressure range for most AEG washing machines is between 2 and 4 bar. This range is essential for normal filling operation:
- Below 2 bar: Water enters slowly and reluctantly, which may cause the EC1 error.
- Above 4 bar: The system is strained; valves may behave erratically or leaks can occur.
