On a Fagor cooktop, the F4 error usually indicates an open circuit in the temperature sensor. Practically, the cooktop detects an out-of-range or unreliable thermal reading and activates a safety lock that blocks normal operation to prevent overheating or incorrect regulation. This is an electrical diagnostic fault, not a cosmetic warning: the electronics cannot trust the information coming from the thermal sensor and therefore limits or stops the appliance.

What the cooktop is measuring
The temperature sensor informs the main control module about the heat level in a cooking zone so the system can regulate power or cut off current when necessary. When the sensor circuit opens or the signal becomes unreliable, the module interprets the reading as invalid and enters protection mode. On many Fagor models the sensor associated with the rear zone is commonly involved, which is why the message often refers to that area.

Most common causes
1. Faulty thermal probe

Loose, dirty or corroded terminals are frequent in kitchen environments where steam, grease and temperature changes are common. A contact that barely fits or that oxidizes can cause intermittent or permanent open-circuit readings.
3. Wiring damage
Wires can be pinched during installation, abraded against metal edges, or broken internally while the insulation looks intact. These mechanical faults produce exactly the kind of open-circuit symptom the F4 code reports.
4. Electronic input (control board)
Less often, the control board input that reads the sensor may be damaged and no longer process a correct signal. This scenario becomes likely only after ruling out probe, connector and wiring faults.
How to check it without guessing
Safety first
Disconnect the cooktop from the electrical supply before any inspection. Turning off the controls is not sufficient—cut the power at the appropriate point and wait until the appliance is de-energized.
Visual inspection
- Follow the sensor cable from the probe to the control board and look for cuts, crushing, rubbing marks, blackened spots, moisture or corrosion.
- Check connectors for loose fit, bent pins or oxidation.
- Inspect areas where the harness crosses metal edges or hot zones.
Electrical checks
Use a multimeter to measure continuity and resistance. A healthy sensor gives a stable, expected resistance; an open circuit shows infinite resistance and a short shows near-zero. Intermittent or jumping readings indicate a failing probe, damaged conductor, or poor contact.
Follow the cable route
Do not limit inspection to the visible ends. Wires often break inside the sheath; trace the entire route to detect hidden mechanical damage or pressure points from the countertop installation.

Replace the thermal probe
The cleanest and most reliable solution when the probe is faulty is to replace it with a compatible part. Temporary fixes or improvised connections often produce intermittent faults that are harder to diagnose and more annoying than a constant error.
Fix wiring and connectors
If the problem is the cable or connector, the repair depends on the damage: clean or replace corroded terminals, reterminate or splice broken conductors, and reposition the harness to avoid rubbing or pinching. Contact quality matters as much as the part itself—new probes require good connections to function correctly.
Control board intervention
When probe and wiring are confirmed good, suspect the electronic input of the board. Diagnosis and repair at this stage require specialized tools and expertise and may involve checking the input circuit or replacing the control board.
Signs that help distinguish the fault
Timing of the error
- If F4 appears immediately on power-up, the probe, connector or near-board cable is more likely at fault.
- If it appears after minutes of use, heat may be worsening a weak connection or opening an internal crack.
Location and repetition
If the error consistently affects the same cooking zone, focus on that circuit—repetition in one point usually points to a local issue rather than a random or general fault.
Response to manipulating wiring
Gently moving the harness or connector while observing the code or meter readings is a simple but effective test: if the error changes, disappears or returns with movement, the cause is almost certainly mechanical (bad contact or internal wire break).

Basic inspection with a multimeter and visual checks can locate many faults, but if repair requires dismantling internal parts, working near live elements, or diagnosing the control board, leave it to a professional.
