What the F2 code means

The F2 code on an Electrolux induction cooktop signals that the hob’s detection system has found conditions that are not safe or appropriate for heating. It is not a cosmetic message: the electronics interrupt operation to protect the cookware and the appliance. In practice, F2 usually indicates a problem with cookware detection — for example an empty pan, a non‑induction base, moisture, or an incorrect match between pan size and the selected zone.

How induction detection works

Induction heats by generating an electromagnetic field that excites the metal base of suitable cookware. The glass surface itself does not heat. The cooktop’s sensors expect a specific magnetic/thermal response from the pot or pan; if that response is weak, irregular, or absent, the system refuses to energize the zone and displays F2. This strict behaviour prevents overheating of empty or unsuitable cookware and avoids internal damage.

Common causes of F2

  • Empty pan: Activating a zone with no contents is detected as unsafe and often triggers F2.
  • Incompatible cookware: Pots without a ferromagnetic base (aluminium, copper without magnetic layer) or with very thin, warped or uneven bottoms.
  • Poor placement: Cookware that is too small for the selected zone or not centered.
  • Moisture or residues: Water film, droplets, grease or cleaning residues under or on the cookware base or on the glass surface.
  • Unsuitable contents for an automatic function: Using oil, broths or mixtures when a function (e.g., SenseBoil) expects plain water.
  • Certain cookware constructions: Encapsulated bases, very old or special‑coated cast iron that do not produce the expected magnetic response.

Relation with SenseBoil and other automatic functions

Automatic functions like SenseBoil monitor the pot’s thermal signature to control boiling and prevent boil‑overs. They require a flat, induction‑compatible base, a dry surface, and typically water as the content reference. If any of these conditions fail — e.g., oil instead of water, moisture on the glass, a too‑small or warped pan — the function cancels and the cooktop shows F2. Even small droplets after cleaning can confuse the sensors, because induction electronics are highly sensitive and conservative for safety.

How to fix F2 without technical intervention

  1. Dry the hob and cookware: Wipe the glass, the zone edges and the pot base with a soft cloth until fully dry.
  2. Use compatible cookware: Check that the pot is induction‑compatible. A quick magnet test helps: if a magnet sticks firmly to the base, the pan is likely suitable.
  3. Center and size correctly: Place the cookware centered on the active zone and ensure the base covers the required area (not too small for the zone).
  4. Fill when needed: For functions designed for boiling water, use water instead of oil or thick broths so the sensor gets the expected thermal pattern.
  5. Power cycle the cooktop: Turn the appliance off, disconnect power (or switch off the circuit), wait a few minutes and restart to clear temporary states.
  6. Try another pot: Test with a known‑good induction pan to determine whether the issue is cookware specific.

  • Encapsulated bases or special coatings that don’t interact uniformly with every cooktop model.

Steel and specifically labeled induction cookware usually work best.

When to suspect a technical fault

If F2 persists after you have exhausted the user checks — using multiple known‑good induction pans, ensuring the surface is dry, centering correctly, and power cycling — the problem may be technical. Signs that suggest a fault rather than incorrect use:

  • The code appears across different zones with different cookware.
  • F2 remains after a full power reset.
  • Other error codes or unusual behaviour (zones that never heat, intermittent faults).

Possible internal issues include faulty detection sensors, control electronics, or internal wiring. In these cases, professional inspection and repair are advisable to avoid worsening the fault.

Severity and next steps

In most homes F2 is a low‑severity, user‑correctable warning caused by cookware, placement or moisture. It becomes medium severity if it repeats despite valid cookware and resets, since that points to a sensor or electronic fault requiring service.
