E9 error on a Balay induction hob: causes and solution
The E9 code may hide a power or communication fault. These are its causes and the safe checks to make.
When a Balay induction hob displays E9, it often stops heating one zone or a group of cooking areas, even though the rest of the panel remains lit. The warning does not identify one specific part by itself: depending on the model, it may be linked to the power module, communication between electronic boards or an issue caused by the electrical supply.

What the E9 error means on Balay hobs
The E9 code must be interpreted together with the exact model and product number of the hob. On equipment such as the Balay 3EB917M/02, a fault affecting the right-hand cooking zones often points to the electronic module controlling those areas. It is not the same as incorrect pan detection or the child lock.
During a documented repair of this model, the right power module showed damage to the LNK304GN switching regulator, several resistors and zener diodes. A 3.3-microfarad resonant capacitor with incorrect capacitance and equivalent series resistance was also found. These components work in the induction power and control circuits, so their deterioration can cause a persistent E9 and partial loss of the cooking zones.
Safe checks before opening the hob
The first attempt is to switch off the hob and cut its supply at the relevant circuit breaker or fuse for at least 30 seconds. Restore the power and test the panel without cookware on it. This reset may clear a temporary lock caused by an electrical fluctuation, but it will not repair a failed component.
The surface should be dry, clean and free of metal objects. It is also worth checking whether the message changes after holding the sensor for the affected zone for a few seconds, since some models display additional information after this action. If the error returns immediately, only two zones fail, or there are clicking sounds, a burning smell or breaker trips, stop using the appliance and do not keep repeating the reset.
Opening an induction hob to inspect capacitors, IGBTs, diodes or solder joints is not advisable without specialist training. Even when switched off, capacitors may retain a dangerous charge. Checking wiring, voltages and control signals requires measuring instruments and electrical safety procedures; removing the cover does not turn the fault into a home repair.
Repairing or replacing the module
The technician must first establish whether the error comes from the power supply, wiring between modules or the power electronics. A visual inspection may reveal a ruptured component, but it cannot rule out hidden damage. Measurements with a multimeter and oscilloscope can identify open diodes, degraded capacitors or faults that leave no visible marks.
When the damage is limited to a few components, the module may be repaired in a laboratory. However, if several parts are affected, areas are overheated or later stability is uncertain, complete replacement is often more reliable. The new module must be programmed to communicate with the rest of the hob; installing it without that configuration may leave the code in place or create additional warnings.
The cost depends on the model, electronic part availability and diagnostic time. Component repair is usually cheaper than replacing the complete assembly, but it is not always worthwhile when the module has extensive damage. The repair warranty and the condition of the glass, sensors and induction coils should also influence the decision.
A code that calls for diagnosis, not guesses
An E9 display on a Balay does not automatically mean that the entire hob is beyond repair. Sometimes the cause is a power reset or a faulty connection; in other cases, the warning reveals a serious power-module failure. The distribution of the zones that stop working is a valuable clue, but a definitive diagnosis requires identifying the model and testing the electronics.
The safest approach is to perform one reset, record the code and note which zones are affected. With that information, a qualified service can decide whether to repair the electronic board or install a factory module, avoiding random part replacements and reducing the risk of further damage.
