Error 22 on a Balay hob: causes and safe fix
ER22 is often caused by moisture around the controls. Find out how to act safely without damaging the hob.

The ER22 code on a Balay hob usually indicates moisture around the touch-control panel, even when no visible water remains on the glass. A spill, steam from a pot, condensation from the oven or dirt around the controls can make the system lock the appliance as a protective measure. The hob stops responding to prevent unintended activation and possible electrical damage.
If you have a problem with your hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the ER22 code means on a Balay hob
The warning appears when the Touch Control detects abnormal conditions around the buttons. The electronics interpret the moisture as a possible cause of a false command, such as switching on a cooking zone or changing its power without anyone touching the control. The lock therefore does not necessarily mean that the heating element or induction module has failed.
The cause may be as subtle as a thin film of water left beneath the edge of the panel after cleaning. Cooking with substantial steam, especially with uncovered cookware, can also contribute, as can using the oven directly below the countertop. In poorly ventilated installations, heat and moisture collect beneath the glass, so the error may appear hours later even when the surface looks completely dry.
How to clear error 22 safely
Switch off the hob and remove any cookware left on it. Then dry the glass and, above all, the control area with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not use scouring pads, abrasive cleaners or large amounts of liquid: cleaning a stain by spreading moisture toward the controls can make the problem last longer.
If the message remains, disconnect the power using an accessible plug or the relevant circuit breaker and wait several minutes before restoring it. This reset allows the electronics to leave protection mode, but it does not replace drying. Keep the kitchen ventilated and allow the unit to cool and lose moisture naturally before cooking again.
Opening the hob, applying alcohol inside, leaving it in direct sunlight or directing a hair dryer at the vents is not recommended. Intense heat can deform seals, damage components or push moisture deeper into the appliance. Any work beneath the glass should be performed by a professional with the power disconnected, since the hob contains connections and voltages that are unsafe for home handling.
When the touch panel may be faulty
When ER22 disappears after drying and resetting, the most likely explanation is a temporary incident. If it returns every time the hob starts, remains for hours or appears in a dry kitchen, the likelihood of a fault in the control panel, its wiring or the electronic control board increases.
Also look for external signs such as moisture beneath the countertop, a nearby leak, damaged wiring, a burning smell, clicking sounds or areas of glass that heat without control. If any of these signs appear, disconnect the appliance and do not force it to operate. Breaking the glass to make an insurance claim is dangerous, can worsen the fault and may constitute fraudulent misrepresentation.
The service department will need the full model and product number shown on the rating plate. With those details, it can check whether the code has the same meaning for that specific series. ER22 remaining after proper drying is the point that separates an environmental incident from an electronic repair, and continuing to use the hob without a diagnosis is rarely a good choice.
A useful protection that should not be ignored
Error 22 does not usually signal a catastrophic failure, but it does show that the system has detected a condition capable of affecting the controls. Patient drying, ventilation and a power reset resolve many cases without opening the appliance. The important distinction is that a clean surface is not always a completely dry control panel.
If the code returns without spills or steam, the Balay hob needs professional inspection. A preventive lock is preferable to unexpected activation: it protects the appliance, the countertop and the person cooking from an unwanted electrical command.
