What the F4 error means in a Fagor boiler
The F4 error on a Fagor boiler is a safety lockout caused by excessive temperature in the primary circuit. It is not a minor display fault: the control electronics stop the unit to prevent damage to the heat exchanger, pump and thermal protection elements. Main causes of the F4 fault
- Poor circulation: the most common root cause. A pump with low performance, partially closed valves or trapped air produce slow flow and local overheating.
- Heat exchanger fouling: scale, sediment or internal dirt act as insulation so heat is not transferred to the water, forming thermal pockets.
- Safety/sensor activation: the safety thermostat opens; in some combi-thermal models a water pressure switch may act, and in atmospheric boilers the TTB (thermal trip in the flue) can trigger a shutdown.
- Sensor or control faults: a drifted temperature probe, faulty thermostat or control board error can cause premature or immediate lockout.
- Hydraulic imbalances: closed circuits, clogged valves or partial blockages that restrict flow even with normal pressure readings.
Signs and symptoms that help identify the cause
F4 is usually accompanied by clues that indicate whether the problem is hydraulic, thermal or electrical:
- Boiler runs for a few minutes then shuts off, or goes into immediate lockout.
- Display shows F4 or a steady/flashing red indicator on units without a screen.
- Boiling noises, uneven hum from the pump, small knocks on start-up or radiators that heat slowly or unevenly.
- Circuit pressure may still read normally despite F4, showing that pressure gauge alone does not rule out circulation or exchange problems.
- Repetition: a one-off trip can be an air pocket or demand spike; recurring F4 after reset usually indicates a deeper fault (pump wear, blocked exchanger, faulty sensor).
What you can check safely before calling a technician
- Check system pressure: typical domestic range is around 1–1.5 bar when cold (consult your manual for model-specific values).
- Bleed radiators to remove trapped air if you hear knocks or notice cold tops on radiators.
- Verify heating demand and controls: room thermostat settings, programming, and that zone valves are open.
- Check power supply and that the boiler is receiving mains power; visual inspection for obvious leaks or discharge from the safety valve.
- Attempt a single reset only if you understand the procedure; do not repeatedly reset the unit if the error returns immediately.
Recommended technical checks and likely remedies
- Inspect and test the circulation pump: measure flow/pressure differential and replace or refurbish if performance has dropped.
- Flush and clean the circuit and heat exchanger: remove scale and sediment (chemical or mechanical cleaning) to restore heat transfer.
- Check and, if necessary, replace safety devices and sensors: safety thermostat, temperature probes, pressure switch and TTB where applicable.
- Verify and adjust valve positions, bypass settings and any auto-balancing elements to ensure correct flow paths.
- Examine the control board and wiring for faults that could cause false trips or incorrect readings.
- Where scale is severe, consider water treatment or replacement of the exchanger to prevent recurrence.
When the timing of the fault helps diagnose it
If the boiler starts normally and trips after a few minutes, suspect progressive overheating from poor dissipation (pump, scale, air). If the lockout occurs immediately on start, focus first on sensors, safety thermostats and control logic.
When to call a qualified technician
- The error returns after a sensible reset.
- There is visible discharge from the safety valve, persistent abnormal noises, or signs of overheating.
- You suspect scale build-up, a failing pump, or an electrical/sensor fault beyond simple user checks.
- Any intervention that requires opening the boiler, working on gas, combustion or internal electrics.
