The D38 error indicates a disconnection in the Titan Active System (TAS), the circuit that monitors and protects the domestic hot water (DHW) storage tank. When this code appears the boiler may stop DHW production immediately because the electronics detect an open circuit or lack of the expected signal for that subsystem. The appliance can still operate in other respects, but the TAS protection is not being validated.
What D38 actually indicates
D38 = Titan Active System disconnection. Technically this means the controller has detected an open circuit or loss of continuity in the part of the installation responsible for reading the tank. The fault is not about combustion, hydraulic pressure or a generic burner failure; it is a specific disruption of the DHW monitoring/protection logic.
What happens in the installation when D38 appears
The immediate and visible effect is usually the shutdown of DHW production: taps and showers may deliver cold water and the display will show the code. The less visible but more important consequence is that the storage tank ceases to be supervised by the TAS as designed by the manufacturer, which changes the safety status of the installation.
The boiler may temporarily restart DHW production if you press the r key, but that is only a functional reset and does not fix the underlying cause. If the cause persists the code will reappear when the system next checks the TAS signal.

Open circuit in the Titan Active System
An interrupted signal path (break in wiring, damaged cable, corroded connector) prevents the boiler from reading the tank status and triggers D38.
Missing or incorrect TAS simulation connector (AD212) in installations without TAS
On boilers connected to a tank that does not include the Titan Active System, De Dietrich requires a TAS simulation connector (supplied in kit AD212) to be fitted on the probe/sensor board. If this simulation connector is absent, incorrectly installed, or not recognized by the board, the electronics will interpret the lack of signal as a disconnection and show D38.
Wiring, connectors and probe/sensor board issues
Loose plugs, poorly seated connectors, damaged cables or faults on the probe/sensor board itself can all produce the same symptom. Distinguishing between an external wiring/configuration issue and a failing board requires systematic checking.

Reset with the r key: what it does and its limits
The manufacturer allows DHW production to be restarted with the r key. This is a temporary reset that may clear the lockout and restore hot water briefly. It does not repair the underlying open circuit, missing simulation connector, or board malfunction. If D38 returns after a reset, a technical inspection is required.
