Error E61 in Electrolux washing machine

Description

Error: E61

During heating, the water does not reach the required temperature for the program within the expected time. In many Electrolux models this fault is reported in diagnostic mode.

Possible causes

  • NTC (temperature) probe faulty or with bad connection (incorrect resistance or intermittent reading).
  • Heating element (Tena) damaged, calcified or open circuit.
  • Poor electrical contacts or damaged wiring to the heater or probe.
  • Incorrect hot/cold water connections or problems in water inlet that affect expected water temperature.
  • Faulty relay or control board that does not power the heating circuit correctly.

Troubleshooting and step-by-step checks

  1. Safety first: disconnect the appliance from mains power before inspecting or touching electrical components.
  2. Run diagnostic mode: confirm the E61 appears in diagnostics (this code often appears only in service mode).
  3. Check the NTC probe:
    • Inspect the connector for corrosion, loose pins or broken wires.
    • Measure resistance with a multimeter and compare with the specifications in the service manual for your model. Replace the probe if values are out of range or unstable.
  4. Inspect the heating element (Tena):
    • Check for continuity and correct resistance with a multimeter.
    • Visually inspect for heavy scale or physical damage; replace if faulty or heavily encrusted.
  5. Verify wiring and contacts: examine harnesses, connectors and the earth connection for damage, burns or loose contacts. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  6. Check water connections: ensure hot and cold hoses are correctly connected and water inlet is supplying the expected temperature. Incorrect hose connection can cause the heater to work improperly.
  7. Control board and relays: if heater and probe test OK, inspect the control board and switching relays that power the heater. Replace faulty components as needed.
  8. After repairs: reassemble, restore power and run a test cycle or diagnostic test to confirm the E61 no longer appears.

When to contact a technician

If you cannot identify or fix the fault after the above checks, or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components, contact Electrolux technical support or an authorised service technician. They have the equipment and model-specific documentation to diagnose and repair heating and temperature-sensing faults safely and effectively.

Note for Electrolux dryers

The E61 code can also appear on some Electrolux dryers and usually indicates an NTC probe/temperature sensing or insufficient heating issue. Troubleshooting is similar: check the temperature probe and its connections, verify heating element and airflow, and inspect wiring. For dryers, also ensure vents and airflow paths are clear to allow normal heating.
